Walk Off Home Run Defense Appeals for Third Out

Must be R1 missed 3B. R3 couldn't have missed 3B, and if BR missed 3B, the runs in front of him would have scored to go to extras.

So when the appeal is granted, his run is nullified, that's the 3rd out, so the BR's run can't count. Final score 4–3, not 4–2? Yep, that's what the SI article reports.

Just my usual rant about the MORONIC TV PRODUCERS cutting away from the actual appeal process. Sure, show some random players just standing around instead of the actual action on the field.

Yes camera all over the place but from what we can see they put the ball in play without a batter. The rule only requires a pitcher on the plate but interps require a catcher and batter. My old WUM says that you can still put it in play if the offense refuses to send out a batter. Also it looks like U3 did not go out and PU had the Fair/Foul HR call. I don't know about MiLB but I think CCA would have U3 have R1 touch of 3B with PU having all touches at HP. R1 screaming at PU indicates he had the call of the missed base.

I think it's unnecessary in this case to tell the offense to bring a batter out to put the ball into play (and I suspect the crew discussed this point when they got together). The game is over either way whether they uphold the appeal or not. 

You're correct about CCA and U3 having R1's touch of 3B. No clue what's expected in pro ball.

Upon further review it seems the pitcher stepped off and threw before the PU turned to your point play but to your point about the producers we don't know what happened when the camera panned off. There was a delay where maybe the umps got the ball back to the pitcher and put it in play and they appealed properly.

Yeah, I'm not sure how technical they need to be...I guess the answer is not too technical to put the ball back in play.

Yes. Game ended 4-3...the aggressive player who missed 3B and was called out on appeal was R1.

They need to properly put the ball in play to have a legal appeal. But an improper (not an err) appeal can be repeated until they get it right so if the other team complained it would not preclude finally doing it right. Luckily the appeal happened before all infielders and the pitcher left fair territory.

I'm aware...but PU 100% didn't point the ball in play. At least based upon what we see in the video.

Time for leagues to control that sht until play relaxes. Second occurrence where it might make a difference.

You can blame me for that. 

I wrote a lot of the software in those lighting controllers in Round Rock - if my old work colleagues are to be believed about where those things got installed.  For sure, they are now used in SF's Oracle Park and a lot of other minor league venues.

I can admire you for that. It's a great effect done properly. But venues need to educate their dummies in the press box as to when turn on the effect and, come to mention it, turn off the walkup music. And this old fart loves to do the wave during play. Where do I find the guy that starts that?

As a former broadcaster, I absolutely agree with the thoughts of others as to shot selection during periods of the game.  One of the biggest offenders are producers and directors and their shot selection after a foul ball is hit into the stands.  Do they show the excitement of some fan who acts like they have found a buried treasure?  No.  They show the batter adjusting his batting glove, etc.  Give me a break!
