Question

In Little League rule set “Rule 4.00 Starting and Ending the game”

I do not understand why the line says “if the home team is ahead”, why does that matter…it is the end of the inning from the “If after…” verbiage.

Please note that I removed the Junior this and Senior wording so that it makes the reading easier and “hopefully” to the main question.

Please note that there is extra comma that truly exists in the rule and I am guessing is a mistake in the 5th inning section.

///

If after three (3) innings if the home team is ahead, one team has a lead of fifteen (15) runs or more, the manager of the team with the least runs shall concede the victory to the opponent.

If after four (4) innings if the home team is ahead, one team has a lead of ten (10) runs or more, the manager of the team with the least runs shall concede the victory to the opponent.

If after five (5) innings, if the home team is ahead, one team has a lead of eight (8) runs or more, the manager of the team with the least runs shall concede the victory to the opponent.

The rule doesn't read the way you wrote it.

The rule (4.10(e)) reads:

"If after three (3) innings, two and one-half innings if the home team is ahead..."

"If after four (4) innings, three and one half innings if the home team is ahead..."

"If after five (5) innings, four and one-half innings if the home team is ahead..."

The "if the home team is ahead" is the qualifier that ends the game prior to the natural end of the inning if the home team is ahead at the end of the top half or goes ahead in their half of the specified inning.

Here's one of the comments from the Instructor's Comments following LL rule 4.10(e) that might be helpful--

The home team and the visiting team are treated differently. If the visiting team scores enough runs to take a 10-run lead, the game continues until the home team has completed an equal number of innings; if the home team takes a 10-run lead, after it has become a regulation game, the game must stop immediately.

I agree completely that "Intermediate (50-70) Division/Junior/Senior League" inserts in the rule make it very difficult to parse the rule in the book.  There has to be a clearer way to organize the words on the page.  Maybe one whole section for Majors and below and a second section for Intermediate and above?

I'm with you. For seem reason they seem fixated on treating all of baseball as one things. Majors and below (little field) is simply a different animal. They should have 3 books - Baseball 60 ft, Softball, and Baseball (>60 foot).

Years ago LL had multiple Rulebooks for the various Divisions of BB and SB.

They combined all the BB Divisions into one Rulebook and all the SB Divisions into another "to make it easier"!

I seem to recall when I started umpiring at my local LL (both BB and SB) I used to carry about 6 Rulebooks!

I found that when reading the LL book, I understand that it is 100% written as the Majors level only. Then when thinking about other levels, I look for the exceptions which are typically bracketed in...  Just made it click for me.
