The NFL just pulled the plug on the pre-season.

And with what is going on in baseball (positive tests) things are really up in the air now. What I'm trying to understand is how are (or are) these sports going to comply with CDC guidelines.

For example lets say that the Patriots (Ohio State or a local HS team) has 4 players test positive. By "rule" everyone in contact with this four (the whole team) must quarantine for 14 days. That would mean that team could not play a game for 14 days. IF all teams comply with CDC guidelines I cannot imagine a single game being played as at every point during the season at least one person will likely be positive.

Here locally, the high schools are all over the board. The public school system is on-line for the first 9 weeks and then look at whats going on--but fall sports are still on. Private schools are opening as usual. Colleges are hybrids of on-line and in class.

Not to state the obvious, but what a mess!

NFL is going to have to watch the MLB and learn...but NFL has a much bigger issue making up missed games.

NBA and NHL certainly have an easier time in doing a "bubble" format, since they're effectively a two-month tournament, and not all teams are involved, but I think MLB and NFL are going to have to seriously revisit option that if they want a season.

Otherwise, MLB needs to go to their original contingency plan (which now seems problematic), which was that floating roster of another 30 players who are supposed to be on standby if there's an outbreak...they just never considered what happens if 40-50 players on a team get infected.   Enough players go down I may get that call-up I've been waiting for for 30 years.

I think MLB is first going to have to come down hard on the teams that are still high fiving and hugging and all that (and may have to see if enforcing masks for more players on the field - maybe exceptions for pitcher and outfielders - helps)...on Sunday TB won on a walk off hit in the 10th, and the same old walk-off celebrations ensued...that has to stop, or the season will.

I don't disagree but here is the problem, not only with MLB but also our AHSAA here.

As for MLB...these guys hangout together on planes, on a bus, in the locker room, in hotels, playing cards, drinking etc. Does it really matter if they high-five or hug on the field?

As for our high school athletic association...they are sending these kids back to school (that's fine with me, I get it), back to class, on the football field practicing 3-4 hours a day, full contact, face to face breathing on each other. HOWEVER, their 'solution' to help stop the spread is they have extended the players box (the area in which a team may be on the sidelines during a game--standard is 25-yard-line to 25-yard-line) to the 10-yard line, thus giving them 30 extra yards to separate AFTER they have just been face to face on the field, riding buses to and from school/games, and in school for five days.

In what world does that make any sense? Again, this is not a comment on closing things down or the like, I need my business open and I have not missed a day, using precautions. This is just a comment on the stupidity of folks in charge.

You're not wrong - but MLB can only enforce or address what it sees.  They, and we, can all see the stuff they're doing on the field that are against the rules and recommendations they and the PA agreed to...so it's a starting point....and it's not like anyone can hide or deny it's happening.   That hopefully gets the point across that behaving right in the other areas you mention matters too...the stuff behind closed doors...to at least minimize the risk.

The nature of the spread will become apparent if any Phillies test positive in the next few days...if it sticks with the Marlins, then hopefully the point can be made about what the players (on all teams) need to be doing off the field, together (or preferably not).

Dan Patrick announcing BIG-10 and PAC-12 will cancel their football seasons tomorrow (August 11th)...

WOW.  I can't say that I'm shocked but surprised, yes. This is going to be a long, long fall, fellas.

I'm already listening to church in my driveway (or the church parking lot to feel like I'm there) on the car radio, now no football? Went from empty nesters to nest full, since all classes are online. What next...wait don't answer.

I had 3 great conversations with total strangers as though we were long lost friends.  People seemed warmer and friendlier .... reminded me of right after 9/11.   Maybe some really good stuff will come out of this crap?

I was reading back on everyones reactions, updates and observations and this really stuck out.  I remember the same thing....everyone acting like long-lost friends.

Now we all cannot stand each other.  Strange how divided we became in just a couple of years.  Not only over covid (masks, shutdowns, vaccine, on and on) but so much more.  Strange how things workout. 😪
