It's one of my good buddies birthdays next week and we're having a surprise birthday party for him. He's a high school umpire and I want to have some fun with him. I printed this image and am going to glue it to the cover of the real version. Would y'all laugh? Any other gag gifts you've received.

I would laugh and love it.

Reminds me of a story told by Whitey Herzog several years ago at an umpire function. He was discussing Don Denkinger and how Whitey has forgiven him after all these years. There was some event for Denkinger and Whitey was invited to speak. During his speech, he presented Denkinger a gift - a braille watch.

I think most umpires would get a kick out of it.

During a game, one of our local umpires was in an unusually surly mood and the coach had been riding him.  After a particular exchange, the coach walked back down the base line and asked the BU “What the hell is Joe’s problem today?”  Without missing a beat the BU replied “His seeing-eye dog died.”

Probably not original, but a true story.

Former basketball referee here, but once I asked if there was a patron saint for officials (intending to get a medallion of said saint to wear on game days). Someone suggested Saint Lucy, patron saint of the blind...
