Batter swings , hits ball into fair territory but it was off his hands, kid clearly hurting , didn’t hear the ting of the bat. Ump calls time and says dead ball strike. Right call?

Yes.

Strike on the swing.

Dead ball when the pitch hits the batter before the bat.

Dead ball strike. Where the ball ends up is moot.

This was the situation that lead to the last ejection I had before I left LA.

Your umpire made the correct call.

The hands ARE NOT part of the bat (in baseball -- maybe in cricket).

And batter out if strike three.   I've see this called a "dropped/uncaught third strike" - no, the ball is dead, the batter is out.
