Runner advance on appeal call?

Question

Runner on 2nd. Fly ball to right field, runner fails to tag and advances to 3rd.

We have our pitcher appeal it to the umpire. The runner from 3rd runs home when our pitcher throws to 2nd.

Can the runner advance on an appeal?

If ball is live, yes. In all codes but FED, that is a requirement for an appeal to happen (ball must be live).

In FED (high school), appeals can be normal live appeals OR verbal dead ball appeals.

In OBR games it's actually a smart move by the runner.  If he can get the defense to play on him it kills the ability to appeal.  Can't lose. Out on appeal or only possibly out on the play. He can possibly advance successfully.  Can't lose.

Thus a smarter appeal by the defense would be walking or throwing the ball to 3B and tagging the runner.

In this case, it doesn't matter. R3 couldn't score on an upheld appeal at 2B, since he's the runner being appealed.

However a less experienced pitcher might panic and look to make the play on R3 and prevent that appeal happening.

Also worth note, since the OP doesn't specify rule set. In FED, the defense does not lose the right to appeal if a play is initiated by the offense before the next pitch, IBB, etc.
