I am looking at getting another pair of plate shoes and was considering a pair of 3n2 plate shoes (low top).  Does anyone use these and what are your thoughts?

The New Balance? Or 3n2?

he's probably talking about 3n2, since the new New Balance V3 has a 'patent' type look to it, although NOT patent ......

When I first came back to umpiring after a 15 year lay-off, I was doing it with caution to ensure I really wanted to do this again ...a trial period so to speak.  So, in trying to save money I looked at 3n2, and in 2010 they were just coming out.  I actually had both their base shoe and plate shoe for the 2010 season, then the plate shoes were my back-up when I found some Reebok Magistrates.  My ONLY issue w/ the 3n2's was with the riveted leather piece that holds the metatarsal plate in place ripped.  Happily, 3n2 replaced my shoes with no issues and I had them for quite a while.

I never had an issue with them.  They were light, comfortable, and felt any pain when getting hit.   They get a bad rap because 3n2 is associated w/ softball, and I had many conversations with the guy at 3n2 about making sure their site said "baseball" also, but they never did it.   Anyhow , ...for the price, ... good shoe!

A good friend of mine had a VERY bad experience with them. Took a shot straight on the toe, hobbled him for a week and he had to turn back games.

Based on that stigma, Jeff, Wilson considers and deems the Gold and Platinum as Fast-Pitch Softball protectors. Hear that, all you Wilson worshippers? You're wearing softball gear!!!!
