Runners on 1st & 3rd, one out. Fly ball to OF is caught, runner on 3rd tags up and scores. After that, runner on 1st, who did not tag up, is out on throw back to 1st. Does the run score and/or an appeal need to be made by the defense?

First of all, the play on R1 back into 1B IS an appeal. It's an appeal of his failure to retouch (tag up). So, yes, an appeal needs to be made.

There is no appeal to be made on R3, and I don't read you as asking about one: he retouched and advanced legally.

Whether the run scores is called a "time play," because it depends on the time he scores: if he scores before the 3rd out, then it counts, otherwise not.

This play is NOT an exception to the general rule, as the retouch appeal on R1 is not a force play, and the BR made the 2nd out rather than the 3rd out.

Provided R3 touches HP before the secured ("caught") arrival of the thrown ball to 1B, then the run is scored.

If the defense wishes to appeal R3's departure from 3B, they may do so. According to your described sequence, that appeal will be denied. If the defense wishes to inquire as to the timing of the touch of the plate by R3 vs. R1 being ruled Out, they need to take that up with the PU.

In lieu of that, run scores.

Run scores--no appeal  needed for the out

Why does there not need to be an appeal?

I'm going to guess he is talking about out the "we think R1 left early" appeal.

However, Maven is correct. The throw to 1st IS in fact an appeal. Just not a verbal one because it is obvious to all why they are throwing there.

I the throw to first is the appeal-- I should of said no need for a verbal appeal
