Question regarding whether a ball is fair or foul. This happened in the game 7 last night.

a ball was hit down the third base line before that bag that hit the line, then bounced over the bag, then landed foul. Because the ball hit chalk, then bounced directly over the bag, and landed foul. Why was that ball not fair, and then why was it foul. Can you please help me out

Scott,

you can't trust all of the camera angles from TV.  I know which one you are referring to and I thought the same thing, but it must have been the camera angles we saw on TV and not the view U3 had

That's just it, U3 ruled that it did not bounce directly over the bag. He had to rule that it passed by the bag in foul territory, thus it was a foul ball. That camera angle was not looking straight down the line, rather it was positioned up the first base line thus the illusion that the ball was clearly over third base.

It also has to do with the fore-shortening caused by the telephoto lens (or similar scientific-sounding words).  You can't really tell the ball's position relative to the base at the time it gets over foul territory.

Granted, the only camera angle I saw can't be trusted, and I believe they only ran a replay once. Watching it live, and then that one replay angle, it sure was close. That ball hit the chalk not very far in front of the bag, and the next bounce wasn't all that far on the foul side of the line. It's not a stretch to think maybe a sliver of that ball caught the front edge of the bag. It sure was close, but Hudson had a better view than any of us.
