Run scores with no intervening play

6.01(a) PENALTY discusses where to place runners after interference has occurred. It has the concept of an intervening play.

What if no intervening play is made - as in the defense does not attempt to get R3 out.

I have seen many squeeze plays executed so well that the pitcher fields the ball and only makes a play on the BR. In these situations, R3 has scored well before any throw is completed to first.

This would not matter in FED since we place runners TOI after interference, but how would we handle in OBR/NCAA.

By rule, you're correct for FED about placing runners.

Another forum member PM'ed me this very question the other day, and I'll tell you what I told him: with no intervening play, unless R3's already in or near the dugout, I'm pretty sure that runner hadn't scored at TOI.

It's easy enough to tell because PU should be 1BLX on a play like this. Everything is lined up right in front of him.

Had it this year as PU in FED. R3 crossed in front of me on a bunt up 1BL (easily fair). I see the R3 touch and quickly move up towards 1B for the play at 1B. Easy RLI with R3 scoring. Both coaches came out to question the varying aspects. Easy explanations and game continues.

I agree 100%...but let's say R3 had NOT hit plate prior to RLI.  You'd send him back to 3rd, right?

The toughest part of this would be WHEN did the RLI actually occur?  Does it occur when:

a. BR passes 45' outside the lane

b. Defender sets up for throw

c. Defender makes throw

Whenever we judge the hindrance actually occurred... Big bucks...

Yes R3 would go back if he had not crossed the plate prior to the INT
