Second year doing High School and had first ejection. (Already had my 1st college ejection but thats a different story lol)

Bottom of the 7th, bases loaded home team is down 2-1. Batter hits a pop-up to the shortstop, i did not see my base umpire call infield fly, the shortstop drops the ball and R3 advances home, the shortstop throws home but R3 beats it so i call him safe. I call time to clean the plate, and the visting team coach (lets call him Frank) comes up and says "I want to make a dead ball appeal that the runner that just came in didnt tag up to third on the infield fly." I tell him "Frank he dropped the ball" and after i ask my partner if he called infield fly, which he did but did not signal, after telling me he called infield fly I signal the BR out and verbally say and signal that the run still scores. (Score now tied 2-2) Now the home teams coach (lets call him paul) wants to know why his BR is out and Frank wants to know why the run scores. So i tell Frank, "Frank go talk to james (U1) and i will talk to Paul" so after explaining that the BR is out due to the infield fly rule paul says "ok" and goes back to his position. As im walking back towards the plate Frank is walking by the mound and is waving his arms and yells for the whole stadium to hear "Thats messed up" followed by "This is BullSH*#!" After he said that i say "ok, now your done" he stops turns around is coming towards me, i take out my line-up card  to write down that he was ejected. Frank is now over me trying to intimidate me (im 5'5 and he is just a little taller than me about 5'8) he says, "Why the hell you throw me out for" and i say "for Unsportsmanlike conduct"so after writing on the line up card, i look up at him as i go to look up he pushes the brim of his helmet into my forehead, where the FHSAA logo on my hat is as soon as he did that i pointed to where he made contact and said "Watch it, Thats contact." He goes on to say "thats bullSH*# and blah blah blah" and i just walk away and ge takes a few steps towards me then exits the field. Following the ejection they intentionally walk the next batter get bases loaded again and then pitcher throws 4 pitches in the dirt. Home team wins 3-2.

I got them monday in a district game also, i got 1st base and aready gave my plate umpire and the third base umpire the heads and me being the crew chief hopefully wont cause any problems there. Any advice for my upcoming game with them?

*Side note: If this was a college game I would not have tossed him due to the fact he was not directly saying anything to me. Also i do not beleieve that the contact was intentional but either way it is still contact.

My advice: New game, new length of rope. If he starts saying anything about the last game, you can ask "Are you still hung up on last week's game? That one's over, we're playing a new game now." Then if he persists, he's using his own rope, so use the appropriate warning sequences.

I don't think you were necessarily wrong, by any means....certainly not once it progressed to physical contact. He should be suspended for that alone.

Some suggestions (with 20/20 hindsight of course)...

  • Since it was an un-obvious ruling that affected both coaches, perhaps it would have been better to bring them both together and explain it once after you and your partner decided
  • This may have been an opportunity to use the restriction (of course, if you felt the crown incitement was a major offense, make sure you mention that in the report). The coaches wanted this progression - give it to them. Early.

I don't get it. DHC got a free out on the IFF. He tried to make a retouch appeal on a DROPPED ball? WTF?

And then you sent him to your partner? Why? Your partner got him the out! And he had nothing to do with a possible retouch appeal of R3.

This play seems so garden variety, I'm having trouble seeing how an EJ resulted.

Some people imagine that IFR works as an automatic catch resulting in an out instead of just an automatic out.

I was once at a game where two inexperienced umpires called a runner "out" on appeal for leaving too early on an uncaught infield fly.  Virtually no one in baseball except well-trained umpires understand this rule.

In HS if you don't call it is still an IFF. Just enforce it.

My partner called it but he did not signal

While I think the EJ was fine enough on it's own right as was suggested earlier that perhaps some better game management techniques may have totally avoided the situation that led to the EJ,  Glad to hear there was a suspension and a fine, no contact is ever ok for any reason and when I say no contact i mean none, not even incidental.  Reverse the roles and what would have happened to you?

I like this part, not going to comment on the other stuff as others have already. When that happens, you point and say very loudly (and maybe you did)," That's contact". That way everybody knows he contacted you. Don't let a coach get close enough to "beak" you.

That's bull, coach goes by the mound waves hands and shouts to the fans loud enough for all to hear that this is bullsh*t, and he is gone...
