FWIW, Little League is seeking a director of umpire development. Information on the LL web site.

They'd have to pay me as much as the lowest paid VP to take that position...

Anyone know what these types of gigs pay?  Not that I'm applying just curious.

Guidestar lists some of the VPs compensation packages in the ranges of $134K-$153K. Both SVPs are over $245K while President/CEO is $455K.

These are according to their 2014 Form 990 filing. Not knocking their salaries at all because it is a giant organization and they have a lot of liability to shoulder in those regards.

I imagine Directors would be slightly less than half of any of the VPs. Maybe the $50K range or so. In fact, maybe even less since the Director reports to a Senior Director that is still below VP level.

Yeah, and on page 9 of the LL Rule Book, they state, quote:

"There is no sound reason for paying umpires, or any other person whose services should be provided on a volunteer basis."

Hypocritical BSTRDS IMHO . . . .  and I do ump LL  . . . FOR THE KIDS!

I agree, however, parents do not want to pay for umps, only bitch and gripe, . . . and kids don't get enough allowance or earn enough to pay for umps. That's why I do it. My contribution to the community. I already have had one LL'ger whose games I umped throughout his LL time and make it to the MLB years ago and is still there. :-)

That's great! And I imagine we are in different stages of life. Myself at 27, heading back to school to get a PhD with a wife and a 4 week old isn't going to do something (umpiring) for free at this time that I have poured countless hours into training and development. Am I against community service? No. I serve on boards and committees of varying local businesses so I can still give back to the community how I feel I can right now.

I do understand what LL is trying to do in order for leagues to save money and operate more autonomously; however, the leagues in my area (granted they are most all Dixie sanctioned), are communities that can afford to pay umpires without question. Heck, as of now, they are getting a steal in regards to the umpires we put on their fields everyday.

Different stages in life, different outlooks... No biggie.

. . . and the folks in my area can also easily afford to pay umps . . . they just want it free . . . like the old saying "that's one reason the rich get richer"?

No, but they'll pay $300 for a bat that Junior won't take off his shoulder without a court order, though, won't they?

Umpiring for free is a joke.  Maybe LL should let the local leagues keep more of their fees, so they can pay for umpiring.  Might get a better product.

Our LL pays for is officials.  I think most around these parts do.  And my sons bat this year was $15, yes, fifteen, at Play it Again, and he'll swing it.  :D

Found out tonight that there are no strictly volunteer leagues left in our district. There were 2 left but one went to paying all umpires and the other is using paid umpires to fill when there aren't enough volunteers.

The product we give during tournaments is, on average, better than our local high schools get.

I acknowledge that we aren't a typical district.

Not sure if this has ever been posted before, but thought it was cute:

“At one point during a game, the coach said to one of his young players, "Do you understand what cooperation is? What a team is?"

The little boy nodded in the affirmative.

"Do you understand that what matters is whether we win together as a team?"

The little boy nodded yes.

"So," the coach continued, "when a strike is called, or you're out at first, you don't argue or curse or attack the umpire. Do you understand all that?"

Again the little boy nodded.

"Good," said the coach. "Now go over there and explain it to your mother."

:-)

It's a good thing my local LL paid us because that was my first job starting at 13. It was a good living for a kid too.

I seem to recall the adults in our group getting paid also. I'm not sure how our District felt about paid umpires working the tournament but I do know we always had a large showing in the District as one of the better groups of umpires in the area.

I was offered a range of $38-45,000. It's a non-umpiring position, no on field responsibilities.

Basically just design the online classses and do some of the local regional clinics.

Basically they are making the janitor an umpire.

They had a pool of applicants, didn't tell anyone in the pool they weren't chosen and the re-advertised.

Sad, but not surprising.

Look, I get it doesn't have the responsibilities of the other BoD members. They've removed the UIC chair at the big table, and want to hire someone who will stay silent, and work cheap.

And it's not the pay, as I know a bunch of retired guys here in SoCal, who don't need the dough, who'd do a great a job at a real UIC position. But WP wants a lapdog, who live nears S. Williamsport. Restore the UIC position, and let them telecommute (it's 2016 for gosh sakes), and get someone with real experience to head the largest group of sports officials in the country.

Anyone have a link to the posting?
