OBR Rule 6.01 (a) 4 - Could it ever be applied to a coach

Having a discussion about the Murphy steal of an uncovered 3rd base last night.  Teufel at one point comes to the base, kicks the dirt around, foot in fair territory for a fraction of a second.

How about it? Did the coach's presence confuse the defense, so that they didn't know whom to tag?

There were no fielders in the same zip code as 3B. Why would you look for trouble?

Bad coach-think: "I've never seen that before: it must be illegal!"

There are 234 (or some such)  "known errors" in the book.  Since the penalty is "enforced against" the runner, the rule is in this section.

 

I'll add to maven's comment -- other bad-coach speak:   We fell asleep and messed up.  I'll try to get the umpires to wrongly enforce some obscure rule to get us out of this mess.

To answer your original question, yes a coach is a member of the offensive team. So if such hindrance can be applied to the coach.

I understand.  I read it in a way that would only apply to the runner as that's the title of the rule.
