Our third and fourth scrimmages are this week. First game (televised) will be next Thu, 8/27. State runners-up (smallest school div) on Fri, 8/28.

Great time of year.

I should pick your brain @ZebraStripes - my oldest son is a senior this year and I've considered starting to ref football after he's done. I have no real experience except watching and running the chains. A good friend of mine teaches a class on football officiating and he's encouraged me to take it (and I can do so for free, so he's not just trying to make a buck or anything).

I have my first varsity scrimmage tomorrow.  Had some youth 7, 8/9 games over the weekend.  I really dislike that level, but at $65/game, it's hard to say no.

@kylehutson It's a little different in the game management aspect.  You literally have coaches in your ear most of the game.  Around here, varsity games are done with a set crew.  You get to know each other better and sync up better.

I find video is much more helpful in football than baseball.  There are a lot more examples out there of "normal" plays.

I would go for it.  The time with the crew is awesome.  Baseball is my favorite sport, but football is my favorite to officiate.

I have another preseason game this week, then have my regular season opener next Friday.

$65 for rec?  wow we are way behind down here.  I will be getting $45 this year.

The guy I'll be taking the class from says youth leagues here are $35/game, but they have 3 back-to-back games in a morning (same towns, different age levels), so $105 for about 3 hours of work. That's better than high school baseball here on a per-hour basis (typically $100 for a 4-hour DH).

Volleyball starts next Tuesday. Never have rain outs. Don't have to worry bout cold. Just about my only concern is making sure that the referee stand is secure.

NJ has Varsity and JV back to back. Unlike other states, matches are best of three and I leave the gym after 2.5 hours with a check for anywhere between $110 and $132.

Last year, an older umpire told me I was an idiot if I didn't do Volleyball. Well, I played 2 seasons in HS so I went for it.

Got registered, had a handful of matches, and I have no idea why I didn't do it sooner.

No arguments, rules are straightforward, and all the tough calls are made by parents/JV player linespeople. You show up at 5:30 for a 6:00 start, gone by 8:30, $100+mileage for a V/JV DH.

So attention all umpires. You are an idiot if you don't officiate Volleyball.

I actually enjoy volleyball (I'm usually line-judging my daughter's matches). The problem I see with it is that games around here start at 5:00, which means taking off work early even more. My boss is pretty flexible, but I really don't want to push that.

Football, on the other hand, starts at 7:00 or 7:30.

I did for 6 seasons. My experience:

  1. I liked only 2 partners, and one died.
  2. Some partners were total creepers, leering at teenage girls in tight shorts, often making comments that could get us arrested.
  3. Most of the rest were volleyball wonks who were so uptight about trivial mechanics you'd think the laws of physics were at stake.

I enjoy football about a billion percent more.

Luckily have not had the experience with 2 or 3. Have enjoyed most of the people I worked with. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G870A using Tapatalk
