I did a quick search but only found info for the regualr wilson dyna lite. According to ump-attire website this mask is fairly new item. I am looking for another mask as a backup and alternative to my rawlings Titanium Ultra Lightweight Catcher Facemask LWMXTI . My rawlings mask has black team wendy pads, love this mask. I want a black mask with tan pads. Looking for options and this one came up. Forgive me if this mask has been discussed, I couldn't find in search earlier. Also open to other suggestions. Thanks

You won't find a Wilson Aluminum mask that comes with tan pads. The Aluminum mask comes with memory foam pads which are only made in black!

How does the aluminum Wilson compare to the plus pos zero gravity?

I own the +POS and I've played around with the Wilson but not in a game.

The Wilson has a rougher powder-coat finish while the +POS is plasticized. My +POS took its first hard shot straight in the middle last week and it actually cracked the poly powder coat.

The Wilson pads are a little higher-density and overall the Wilson is a little bit heavier. I've never felt unsafe with the pads in my +POS but I way prefer the finish of the frame itself on the Wilson.

I have the Wilson Dyna-Lite Aluminum mask and love it!  I put the stock black memory pads that came on the aluminum mask on my Wilson Ti mask and put tan TW pads on the aluminum mask

I like contrast in a mask...

Me too. Black pads with silver and tan with black mask. Love that look.

I, however, am a doeskin traditional style pads man. Keep those cloth pads. I went on a tear last year and early this season and I'm stocked up on doeskins for several years. However, I don't subscribe to the change your mask pads every season club or mindset. Loose harness is my key. Pads just help keep the wire bars off my mug.

Exactly!  I don't change my pads frequently, either.  Like you said, loose harness is key.

I was told by MLB Umpire #74 John Tumpane that we should change our pads every two years as well as wear are mask tight. He said after two years because of moisture from your face and the environment the pads offer a serious reduction in protection. He also said they wear their mask tight in The Show so that they can distribute the impact properly as the mask/pads are designed to do. He said if you wear it loose and get injured you could void any insurance claim. Finally e said there are a lot of MLB umps that are using the TW pads with a W applied to the pad. He said it is a belief that the TW's offer superior protection to the Wrap Arounds and Memory foam.

I am just passing along our recent conversation. Don't shoot the messenger.

UPDATE: This past Sunday I was at the MLB Umpire camp and they suggested changing the pads EVERY YEAR.

Also the aluminum Dyna Lite came in and man is it light compared to my steel (which I love the weight BTW) Dyna Lites. I have no given it a whirl because I am waiting on my sun shield however I did manage to blacken that ugly gold W and I like the 'murdered' out look much better. Jury is out on the Memory foam but to the touch they seem too soft compared to my TW's. We will see what the game action report produces.

If I bought this mask was going to run Tan Team wendy pads in it. Have black team wendy pads in my Rawlings LWMXTI. Or maybe some Tan doe skin pads if I can find some. Thought about looking for a All star FM25 to powdercoat also, but leaning towards this wilson mask right now.

MIKE ,

The ZERO-G Masks are powder coated.  Its as permanent as a paint can ever get it will not crack.

For Me there is 1 mask that I desire above all others: Nike TI.

After that there are about 4 others that are a coin flip due because they are nearly the same in weight, but have slight difference in shape and cost: Wilson TI(any of the 3 shapes), Wilson Aluminum, +Pos Zero-G, Rawlings TI.

Shape Evaluation:

Wilson TI(New Shape): Plus: Good Profile, Ear design keeps harness in place, Love the TG angle Neg: Not sure about curved ears, Retail Cost

Wilson TI(New View): Plus: Excellent Vision Ear Design keeps harness in place, ear shape Neg: Close to face, Extreme TG Angle, Retail Cost

Wilson Ti(Trad): Plus: Good Profile, Ear design keeps harness in place, ear shape Neg: TG Angle not as good and New Shape or Nike, Retail Cost

Wilson Aluminum: Plus: Good Profile, TG angle, Matte Finish, Retail Cost Neg: bar thickness, curved ears

Rawlings TI(not sure why I sold mine...) Plus: Profile(Real Close to Nike), TG Angle, Black inside finish eliminates glare, bar thickness Neg: Ear shape, TG Length, harness slides, Retail Cost

+Pos Zero-G: Plus: Ears similar to Nike in appearance, Retail Price Neg: Profile(High), Short TG, harness slides.

I love all these masks, but the five I am currently holding are 2 Nike TI's, +Pos Zero G, Black WIlson Aluminum and Wilson Traditional with TG removed. Going to be hard to get rid of 1, because like I said above I really like them all for different reasons.

@Majordave Who is your preferred supplier for the doeskin pads?  Thanks!

I can appreciate that, and I know they're powder coated, but the powder coat is a plasticized finish, not a rough metallic finish like the new aluminium Dyna Lite.

Granted, the shot might not have actually caused the crack, but if there was a small crack in the finish beforehand, then the shot simply expanded it. But the finish is absolutely cracked.

I absolutely do. And if you're the Dan from +POS, I bought it directly from you last year.

@DavisBlue

1. Other members of Umpire-Empire who were willing to sell me their unwanted/extra pads.

2.  Other members here who pointed me to their various finds on the web when I asked for help.

3. eBay searches.

My preferred tan doeskins are the Wilson West-Vest model with MLB patch on lower middle Velcro strap. I also have some non-WV Wilson's and some Rawlings. The only black leather (not sure if actually doeskin due to the coloring) are Wilson with the hideous Gold W patch. I cover the patches with a folded over old shoulder mark bearing my rank symbol from my Army days.

I prefer the "pillow" or rounded style traditional pads over the "squared" or "rectangular" shaped pads like Honig's sells. Honigs are calfskin not doeskin by the way. The Rawlings are doeskin/deer leather. +POS also sells leather pads. I had a used pair an ex-AAA umpire, Brent Persinger, gave me when I first started out.  They were kind of orangish in color and were pretty worn. I replaced them with real WV doeskins in my first summer of umpiring.

Can you take a picture of where the paint is chipped? This is the charcoal, I guess you can call it a gloss powder coat. The ZRO-G cold steel is the same mask available in Matte powder coating.  I have never seen the finish on these chip or crack.

@Majordave

Thanks!  I was hoping there might be a supplier I was unaware of.  I guess I'll keep hoping!

I can't stand the "W" or logos in general.  The rank is a great idea.  I put a small American Flag patch over the logo.Flag_Mask.thumb.jpg.96ff0c323f4eed477bc4

PM'd you.

BTW, love the new website layout. Much more modern and much easier to get around. Looks like there have been a bunch of products added too!

EDIT: Though it would appear that there are still some bugs to quash. For example when trying to order this shirt, I'm unable to even select a size.

Thanks Mike. Glad its finished, Its a huge upgrade and a major task that took half the year. I was hoping to launch with the new chest protector, that will be out shortly. I kept making changes to the protector and forgot about the deadline months ago.

The shirt you were looking at is not available right now.

That's the only shirt on line I don't have online.

Regards to the mask, I cant even see what you are referring to in the picture you PM'd me. The electro static powder coat is very hard to remove. I have not had any complaints about the mask.
