I was watching a spring training game the other day and noticed Gary Cederstrom was wearing this:

I guess it could be the next generation of the Shock F/X. One thing to note is that the helmet had a matte finish and not a shiny one.

I really like the idea of a Matte Finished umpire helmet. Less noticeable. I have noticed that several HS teams in my area are using Matte Batting helmets. I saw one matte catching helmet the other day, but it seem to really look dirty. The way we take care of stuff, I bet the Matte finish would look pretty sweet.

Squint your eyes a bit, and the wire part now looks just like a traditional mask. The part that got smashed in an MLB game, just above the forehead, is now covered by wire.

So now you've got to ask yourself, what's the point?

p.s. that stance is comical

It looks like they tried to fix a problem with the shell by extending the mask over the forehead. Would it not make more sense to strengthen the shell instead....

Simply extending the wire frame is the easiest way out in terms of time and $$$$. Maybe this is a reaction to recent court case. That looks like something a knight would wear in a jousting tournament.

Could they get any more logos on the front of that bucket?

I don't think the lawsuit involved an HSM. I think it was a traditional mask. He switched to an HSM after his injury I believe. I bet he does not get free stuff from Wilson any more.

Ed Hickox sued over a traditional mask breaking on him. Then he switched to an FX, and then really got clocked on the forehead. This new design looks like it's trying to prevent that same forehead shot.

I believe he's now wearing an All Star bucket.

And yeah, he's probably not on Wilson's Christmas card list anymore.

In 2005 umpire Ed Hickox was working home plate and wearing a mask given to him by a Wilson Sporting Goods representative. According to a complaint filed in the Superior Court of the District of Columbia, during the game at RFK Stadium "a foul ball struck the throat guard of Plaintiff's mask. The impact dislodged the mask's metal frame from the rest of the mask. The ball's force pushed the frame into Plaintiff's ear canal, then pushed the entire mask completely off of Plaintiff's head and onto the ground. The Plaintiff suffered numerous injuries, including but not excluding, a concussion, broken bones in his left ear, and an inner-ear fluid leak from his right ear." Hickox had surgery to remove the broken ear bone and have it replaced with a titanium prosthesis

That sounds like he may have been wearing an FX prototype.

Hickox does sport the All-Star MVP4000, but it's modified heavily for concussion purposed with extra padding ....I believe that's what Brad said somewhere on here .......

I noticed that Welke and Cederstrom were both wearing this style on opening day. The bars on Welke's helmet were black which IMHO looked much better. Seeing Cederstrom behind Posey tonight made e glad to be an All-star HSM owner.I have not seen a clear side shot of the new helmet, but the shocks due appear to be gone. I am still loving the matte finish though. We need someone from Wilson or ump-attire to get us some dirt on this new piece of gear

If that was a new Shock F/X it does not have the springs on the side like the shock has now. That one is very ugly. I will keep my 2.0

Hes working the plate in the Dodgers-Giants game on ESPN.

Looks like a traditional mask cage put on the front of a helmet. Sort of makes more sense to me than a traditional HSM where the mask is in the helmet. This frame looks like it fits over the front of the face and the helmet is behind the cage.

Got a good look at his HSM last night and it Does have the shocks on it. I am not a big fan of the new cage thou. I love my 2.0, I have taken several off the helmet and face mask.

Is this the helmet that Cederstrom was wearing or not? If anyone knows where to get the model that Cederstrom is wearing please let me know
