I pay $5. Per pair and only dryclean each pair twice. Once before college season begins and once halfway through. The rest of the year I just wash in cold water. Hang dry and sometimes touch up with an iron on wool setting.

This is my first post here, but I am in the middle of the GD to PolyWool transition.  All I can say is that I wish I would have spent the money earlier.  You not only look better, but you feel better and more professional with the proper drape of the PWs.  Do not skimp on the hem though, if your going to fork the cash over, research how they are supposed to be hemmed for baseball.  Get a tailor to do it, not the hack at the dry cleaning place.  NOTE: I wear a size 38 in ALL other pants, but for the PWs I wear a 40.  That's just how it worked out.  

After wearing them for 50 games or so this season, I will not wear my GDs unless my partner wears them.  And that will only be in a game where I know a fashion nazi will be nitpicking everything about us as a unit.

I used to own Gerry Davis and Honig's ultimate heather gray plate and base pants. Now, just two pairs each of Honig's Poly-wools plate and base. I don't give a flying F*#K what my partner wears or if we even come close to matching. I only wear the PWs at any level I work.

Mans You know what?  Nobody else cares if we match or not either.  I've worn PWs for plate work in HS regional championship games when heather was the prescribed color. Nobody said a word. Including the state commissioner.

​Agreed. I only wear the GD if I have to wear 10 layers because it is so cold no one cares. Last year I wore the PW's in the Illinois State Championship game. One of my partners wore the GD's. I didn't care, I needed the look and the comfort. No one said a word.

​I have them unaltered, then go see my own person to get them altered. I think that is the way to do it.

​That's what I figured, also because my grandmother does a pretty darn good job and I only have to go over about half a block to have it done.

Just took the leap of faith and spent the money on both plate and base honors poly-wools. It stings a but right now but I'm sure when I have them 3,4,5 years from now it won't hurt so bad. Plus it's only a few game fees which can be made up quickly.

Do not cut them when you hem it.  Leave the excess so they don't ride up.  Tell your tailor don't cut, fold it up and sew.

From what I understand they are pretty cool, the poly-wool pants are 80% polyester to 20% wool.

Wool is a fabric that breathes.  It will keep you cooler in hot weather than many fabrics and warmer in cold weather than others.  Think of a sheep out in all kinds of weather.

I like to hem up 5-6" for two reasons. One, it puts some weight at the bottom, to keep them from getting caught up on the shin guards. And, that added length will make them easier to resell on eBay, somewhere down the road.

 

I looked in my backup bag for some GD "mudders", for a wet field game. Nope. I'd given them all away to Junior umpires. Not missed by me, though.

Thank god I started doing this after heather got dropped.  softball can keep that s#!t.  I actually feel cooler in hot weather than I ever did with my GDs..  It could be the color, because GDs are darker, but I think its the material because they feel like a thick plastic bag.
