Hey Gang! Got asked to base ump for some 10-12 year olds in LL this year and fell in love with it. Did well enough to be asked to ump a minors tournament that our LL hosted.

So naturally, I have bene getting my hands and eyes on everything I can to learn more. I have just been asked to ump from behind the plate for fall ball. Nervous, having not been behind the plate, but confident I know the rules well. Just have to get used to calling balls and strikes.

Found a great site online that taught be alot about base umpire positioning. Any hints and tips welcome.

The only question I have so far is why, on the Little League site, is it going to cost me $10.95 to ship four $2 Little League Umpire patches?? UGH!

Looking forward to reading and listening.

Welcome the site, and congrats on catching the bug of umpiring. There is a wealth of info on this site. Try the mechanics section for some tips on positioning, plate stances, etc. Attend any clinics in your your area if possible, you'll learn more there than you can imagine. You say you know the rules. Make sure you have a LL rulebook and read it. Read it cover to cover and then read it again. Never stop reading it. Guarantee you find stuff in there you never knew. Most important...Have fun.

Can't help you with the patches though.

No league should require fall ball umpires to wear the patch. Spend the money on the LL umpire registry and then you have access to the RIM which is the rule book with explanations.

Find a local LL . They SHOULD give you the patches for FREE or call Williamsport and THEY SHOULD send them to you for FREE NO CHARGES!

The LL Umpire Registry , IMHO, isn't worth the $$.

Well, it's one of my "peeves" with LL. You can get the Rule books for FREE if you contact a local LL . . . . AND if THEY want you to do LL, They should give you a RIM FREE or a FREE RIM download.

Good point if you are a "volunteer".

Welcome to the site, I pretty much started the same way. Like @Richvee said there is a lot of information to be found here. I was active here the first year I got into it and just read everything before finally officially joining. Lot of experience passes through here on a daily basis, I even just bought a membership to support the people that give all this info for free. As far as the patch, your UIC should be able to give you a few of them free of charge. If he doesn't send me a PM and I will get some to you myself. Honigs will also sell LL shirts with patches and embroidery already set to go found here; http://www.honigs.com/detail.asp?Item=446&Sub=171 little higher in price, but nice shirts, I prefer them to other brands myself.

Welcome!

Does your league actually care about the patches?  I've got to tell you ours doesn't (because I don't.)

Get out there--you'll stink but quickly get better.   Always be thinking about how to improve and you'll rapidly become one of the good ones.

If you have any LL specific stuff you're curious about, feel free to ping me.
