Magic:

A big part of reaching your fitness goals is staying healthy enough to keep going. There are lots of resources on the web about run walk run programs that will ease you into things.

@Magic

Don't quit!  It will get easier.  Two weeks is all it takes.  To help your muscles and joints feel better, drink a sh*tload of water, everyday.  If I can do it, anyone can do it.  Good luck!!!

I just jog/walked 3 miles tonight for the first time. My whole body hurts. My knees, calfs, hamstrings, thighs, and back. It takes every ounce of energy I have to get out of the house and keep this going. But I have a mission. And I refuse to fail.

You weren't supposed to jump straight in. Try only a mile next time and work up to two after it seems too easy. If you're in that much pain after one workout you need to slow down.

I'm starting to think that maybe we should file emergency contact numbers with one of our fellow U-E members, so that if one of us participating in this Physical Challenge disappears from posting after so many days, we fear you may be in need of a search party or help sent.

The Bubba Blue Buddy System,

That's actually a brilliant idea, especially for us who run mountain trails and such.

Sounds like somebody wants to get some umpires phone numbers, besides Greg Gibson's of-course.

I'll take challenge also. 43 years old, 5'10 roughly around 240. I would love to get down to 190. Just went out and ran 2 miles. Need to make this a habit every day and give up the sodas, that is my weakness

Day three: I am either dead or dying. Why is my hair so wet. Somebody send help.

20 minutes of racquetball, one mile run, strength training. I tired.

MMA made my shoulders so nice.   BUT I still need to work on getting my bf% down because I'm in that stage clinicians lovingly refer to as "out of friggen shape."

We should start putting little bedazzled banners in our signatures, "I took the umpire-empire.com fitness challenge."

I'm also using the MFP app. The barcode scanner is GREAT!

UPDATE: I'm down 10lbs in 15 days. Mostly iust because I was filling my body with garbage amd when I cut it out the weight fell off. My pants fit differently. :D

I allow myself a diet soda once in awhile. But that's about it. Mostly I flavor my water with different Mio flavor enhancers. My protein intake is MUCH better, and Im not wasting my calories. I always finish under my daily goal (2300) and I'm rarely hungry when I eat correctly.

Good for you Jocko. Remember that increased activity is part of the equation as well. Particularly as it effects body composition.

It's really clean eating that does it for you though.

BTW guys on that subject, it can be kind of damaging to put yourself on a calorie budget. If it's working for you, by all means continue but everyone else, don't beat yourself up if you go over what you think is right. A 6'0 man usually needs about 2,000 calories a day just for normal function. If you're adding cardio and strength training into the mix, you'll need more. Just don't use crap as your calories, eat peanut butter or something else that's clean and actually has nutrients in it. (NOT iceberg lettuce.) Calories are needed to make your body function and I promise to you all that if you're eating the RIGHT foods, you don't need to constrict too badly. Jocko is probably about where he needs to be at with 2,300. Just keep in mind that calories=energy. They aren't the enemy if they're "clean calories."

One more tip: You're going to slip up every once in a while. Even you, Jocko. But the thing is, if you make the mistake of eating something you shouldn't have or drinking the wrong soda, don't throw out the whole days nutrition. That's like dropping your phone, seeing a tiny crack and then beating it on the floor until it's shattered.

Sk has now introduced one of the important things to understand, what I think of as nutritional density. How much of your daily nutritional needs are being met with a particular consumption of calories? This is what she calls "clean calories". For example, soda is lots of calories and very little nutritional value; therefore not nutritionally dense. Also don't forget body density, what we are trying to lose is body fat. Exercise can play a big role in keeping the lean mass we have while we are losing weight.

You can actually gain weight from increasing muscle mass.

I spent two weeks away from the weights. Riding MTBs and hiking. Weighed 197 when I got home.

Spent the past week doing extra cardio and weightlifting. Gained 4lbs although I ate much less and much better here at home than I did on my two weeks of adventures.

Trust the MFP caloric suggestion based on your goals. Its math is sound.

Right, mine is 1,320 but I'm not going to lose weight if I'm eating 1,320 calories worth of Twinkies every day. That's all that rant was about.

Hypothetically, yes you would.  But you're still hungry after eating 1,320 calories of Twinkies, so it's really hard to do.

im in.  I started trying the lose weight thing back at the end of April when i stepped on to the scale at 290pounds at 6' 3" my goal is to get down to 240 before the highschool season starts back in february.  I am now down 30 pounds to 260 and still working to make the rest fall off.  I am using Advocare products while working out and eating right. I feel so much betterafter just dropping 30 pounds can't wait to see how good I feel when the rest falls off!

I was about 225 or 230 at one time. Am now about 180. At 5 - 9 I think this is about right.

I'm just seeing this thread and the talk about food and I thought I would share what my doctor told me. I've lost almost 50 lbs just through eating correctly and no exercise outside of umpiring, but I'll have to do some after ball ends til spring. I went to him because I didn't want to be the chubby wife. He's an endocrinologist and a sports medicine specialist. He works for the local mma, boxing, and most of the collegiate local sports. Plus he's a military doctor for the reserves. What he told me was "you're over 40 dummy, quit eating the damn carbs". Once he talked me though what is, basically a modified paleo diet, within a few days I was dropping weight. Less than 5 months and 50 lbs and I can still eat like a farm girl. No counting calories, no weighing or measuring food, but I did have to learn to make sweets differently, sweets are just something I can't give up so I made the effort to learn to make them within the restrictions (and lots of trial and error). I know paleo, even a modified paleo, sounds like the newest fad diet, but I'll give it up, it's totally worked and was easy changes. My husband is not unhappy with the food or the results.

Update: I weigh in each Monday. And as of 9/8 I've lost 17lbs. In 19 days. Not starving myself. Not NOT eating. Sometimes I FORCE myself to eat because I'm just not hungry but my metabolism needs it. Just eating right and doing cardio and some light lifting. I'm on pace to hit my goal weight in just a few months.
