Not only was this a terrible decision from Williamsport, but I'm not even entirely convinced it WASN'T a dead ball strike... If the batter had started jumping up and down shaking his hand, I bet it would have stayed 0-1.

 

IMO, it was not even conclusive that it was a fair ball.

This LLWS umpiring is an embarrassment  for the LL 75 th. Anniversary.  Honestly very hard to watch  games with those stooges in umpire uniforms.

Good case for slowing down.  Why make the foul call - especially when you have 3 other umpires and a replay system as backup?  Let it play out.  If it's then discovered to be foul (or a dead ball strike), then it's easy to go back and fix that.  Can't fix a fair ball that was called foul.

 

Given the circumstances, they should have stuck with the foul call, batter's count is 0-1 and the pitch counts for the pitcher.

 

For those that have it recorded, it was the first batter in the bottom of the 4th.

Wow, just found this on another board.  Apparently, LL was following their replay rules to "vacate" the call:

 

Example 3: A pitch strikes the bat, but the Umpire erroneously rules “hit batter – dead ball.†The proper procedure in calling for a Video Replay is followed. Video evidence shows that the pitch did not hit the batter, and it should have been ruled “fair†or “foul†as the case may be. Ruling – The Game Operations Replay Official, through a Little League Time Out Coordinator at the field, instructs the Umpire-in-Chief that the call is vacated. The Umpire-in-Chief will rule “no pitch,†regardless of the result of the play that ensues, and the pitcher will not be charged with delivering the pitch.
