looks pretty wide, ....would like to see the grid on that ......

Replays indicate the pitch was located over the outer edge of home plate and at the hollow of the knee (px 0.81, pz 1.82 / sz_bot 1.83 [MOE 1.75]), the call was correct.

Jeff, the "grid" uses the data that Gil references to graphically show pitch location. I believe Gil uses the raw data because it better accounts for the "correctness" of a call based on MLB criteria.

Quadratic equations are used to describe parabolic curves. The field of projectile motion is largely based on parabolic curves, and each time a baseball is thrown or hit it follows a parabolic curve, of the form y=ax2+bx+c whereĀ a is a negative number between 0 and -1. (The negative means it reaches a peak instead of dropping to a trough, and the closer to 0 it is the closer to a flat line the path is; if a normal fly ball to center hasĀ a=-1/4, a line drive to an outfielder is probablyĀ a=-1/1024, and a line drive comebacker to the pitcher is probablyĀ a=-1/1048576.)

The equation posted is used to determine where a given quadratic intersects with theĀ y-axis. (For what values of x (there'll either be two, one or zero such values), when substitued into the quadratic give y=0.) Theoretically the path of the ball could be tracked, determine the correct quadratic equation to describe the path, and using aĀ y-axis in line with the bottom of the strike zone determine where such a quadratic would intersect with the axis and translate that result into a position relative to home plate. The process could be repeated for the top of the strike zone, and combine the results of both analyses to determine whether or not the height of the pitch as it crossed the plate was consistent with a called strike. Obviously this analysis would not be sufficient to definitively call a strike as the it doesn't show whether the pitch crossed home plate at all and if it did whether it did so at an appropriate height, though it would potentially eliminate a pitch from being a strike.

There's an infinite number of possibilities for each variable in that equation, but only some would be correct. As proven in The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy (HHGG): any finite number divided by (3 times) infinity equals zero.

The oval strike zone includes that entire box plus a little more up and down as you get closer to the center of the plate.
