I've worn Oakley's for years with varying results. I'll admit I'm a bit of a sunglass snob. Oakely has OK optics, but are terribly over priced in my opinion. That being said I've got 7 pairs. Hands down the VERY best optics I've ever had in sunglasses are the Costa Del Mar's. I use the 580G lens, which is glass. I wear this pair on the diamond.

A word of caution however, they are 200+, but worth every penny in my opinion. I got mine at Bass Pro Shops, they are available online or most outdoor sports stores. The glass should be much more scratch resistant than any other lens out there. It should be noted, I've never scratch a lens in my life, so I'm probably not the guy to ask about that. If they're not on my face, they're in the case. I use the cheap Zeiss wipes from Wal-Mart for cleaning. Occasionally taking them in the house and give them a good soaking in hot water.

Glass, by far, has superior optics and far less prone to scratching than any other materials. You really have to abuse a glass lens to scratch it. However, the optics and scratch resistance comes with a trade off. Glass is heavy, at least 3-4 times heavier than polycarbonate. Second, and most importantly, safety. Yes, glass lenses are are treated to withstand some impact, but do not come close to the impact resistance of plastic or polycarbonate. As a matter of fact, polycarbonate is bullet proof. The impact of a baseball into a glass lens could be devastating. A chance I for one am not willing to take.

What makes Oakley's better than other brands? I don't see the superiority

The optics are better than most other sunglasses. Their coatings and colors are are more consistent and durable than other brands. The way the temples are designed and wrap around the side of your head instead of "hooking" behind your ear lends itself to a more comfortable and more secure fit. Most styles can be Rx'ed in a multitude  of different colors and coatings specific to the type of outdoor activity you plan on using them for. This is not to say there aren't other quality sunglasses. They are plenty. Also, don't be fooled..you ARE paying a premium for that "O" logo on the sides.

I absolutely love, love these sunglasses. They're from Jackson Safety, a well-known maker of safety glasses. In fact, these are in the Industrial/Safety glasses part of Amazon, not sporting goods. They're very lightweight, crystal clear, a little wide so may be a bit big for the more dainty faces but fine for me. I finally did scratch my pair this year but not in any place noticeable, way up in one of the corners. But if I do scratch it, so what. IT'S SIX FREAKIN' BUCKS!!!!! Just use your back up pair. Hell, buy 20 of them, that would still be cheaper than a pair of Oakleys. They do sell other colors and some polarized glasses for a little more, around $22 or so. I bought 5 of them, thinking they'd scratch easily and be cheap/disposable. After a full season, and using them for driving and general use, I'm still on pair #1.

Edited to add: So....after going through the "related items" at the bottom, a seller is offering a 3 pack of these for $13.40.  Less than $5 bucks each.

Tons of guys around here are using these including me. Great prices on ebay

Oakley M-Frames for me.  Love 'em!  No scratches at all.  And I've been on a lot of dust bowls.  They always get a water rinse before their rub.  Then cleaned with the Oakley cleaner and lens rag.  I've had them 3 years now and not one scratch.  Worth every penny!!

Oakley Half-Jackets since 2008. Still going strong. Three sets of interchangeable lenses. G-30 for most games. Awesome view. Makes ball whiter and grass greener. Glare eliminated. Clear for night plates on dusty fields and black iridium ice for full sun zero cloud bases games. So dark they make you sleepy.

Never wipe dry UNLESS you have Oakley wipe cloth. I've had no problems with them. And they always look cool. Hahahaha.

EDIT: Also, never put them down or anywhere than on your head or in the case to avoid scratching lenses. I put on back of my head when sun goes down or in cloth bag and in back inner pocket of left hand ball bag when on plate if not worn.

My .02.......

Unless I'm not reading it properly, those Jackson Safety glasses have no UV protection. For me, that's a pretty big deal.

At the moment I'm just using a cheapie Easton pair, but I'll probably invest in some good ones next year as the season's already nearly over for me :(

@MikeSafari

The amazon listing under product features indicates they provide 99.9% UV protection.  I was looking around the Jackson Safety website (Kimberly-Clark owns this brand) and I could not come across anything that specified UV protection for these glasses.  According to Kimbery-Clark's website, the glasses meet ANSI Z87.1+ standards.  The + indicates impact rated.  I don't know what type of packaging these glasses come with, but there should be something with a "U" followed by a number to indicate UV protection factors for the lenses per the 2010 changes to the ANSI standards associated with protective lenses.

The UV protection is on their datasheet    http://www.na.kccustomerportal.com/Documents/Upload/Application/2811/Learning%20Center/Article/V30%20Nemesis%20Safety%20Eyewear.pdf

Polycarbonate lenses block 99.9% UV. It's an inherent property of the material. It's also the only material that will get the "Z-87.1+" for impact resistance with a 2.0 lens thickness.

Ah, I take it that requires an account? Not sure I'd buy sunglasses without being able to try them on first, though.

ESS is a division of Oakley. They specialize in military, fire, police, etc. they have the Crossbow line which is what Jax purchased but they also have the Crosshair line that are a bit less expensive. I first purchased that line of glasses. All of their lenses interchange on the Cross platform. You can get clear to polarized to fit the frames. Jax has the suppressor frames which work with com-gear or ear muffs for shooting. They won't break the seal with ear muffs that allows outside noise in. The first thing I noticed about the lenses is how thick they are. The frames are light and comfortable for all day wear. I have never had any discomfort while wearing them on the field or off field use.

ESS styling looks very similar to Oakley..

If what NWA_UMP is saying about ESS being a division of Oakley is true, then it makes sense now.

Which maybe sorta validates my contention about Oakley. . . probably the same glasses being manufactured in the same building but one has a 1000% markup and one has a 100% markup.

God Bless capitalism!!
