Base award question

Fed rules. Runner on first. Line drive hit to F5. He catches the ball in air and then throws to F3 to get the runner trying to return to first because he started running on contact. Ball short hops F3 and gets by him and rolls out of play. My first thoughts was the runner gets third for the award. 2 base award so he goes to third his TOP was first. He is awarded second base. What is the correct award?

Correct award is 2 bases from time of pitch. Therefor 3b. Maven is correct.

to be clear -- the umpire should note whether R1 retouches.  If he doesn't, he's subject to being out on appeal.

 

(Just don't want anyone thinking the umpire should direct him to touch, or declare him out without an appeal if he doesn't -- unless the umpire is in SC)
