If your jersey has any navy in it, navy ball bags, navy hat.  If your jersey has any black in it, black ball bags, black hat.

Do they still sell gray ball bags???

I'll sell mine on the cheap, if anyone wants 'em. Granted, they're the heather grey ones. Barely used. Kept 'em around in case a "tournament teen umpire" arrived with next-to-no gear (what do you mean, you don't have a hat? Next you're going to tell me you don't have a cup... Seriously? You don't??) and was expected/ing to do plate.

Otherwise, I've seen grey bags used for softball. :gasp:

I'll echo most others here – bags match the (predominant) trim color.

I used to worry about wearing navy ball bags and a navy hat when I wore a navy shirt. I wear the navy shirt about twice a year now, so I just wear black ball bags and a black hat and it looks fine. I'm in the camp that believes if black shoes and a black belt look okay with navy shirts, so do black hats and ball bags.

This is another thing that non-umpires A) Usually don't notice, and B) Don't care if they do notice.

Just keep in mind that you should make sure that if you wear two they match each other.

Oh, and the that ball bag/s you wear match your partner's/partners'. That's the big one!

For the first time ever for me I wore a black hat over a navy shirt yesterday. My partner for a fall HS level tourney only had navy shirt and I only brought black hats and for some odd reason grabbed my navy shirt which I usually leave at home except for Missouri HS games. He only had a plain black hat. It looked fine. No one said anything and we worked a good game with zero controversy. He wore black ball bags too. There is no longer a stigma of pairing navy with black if you both match. At least for me there isn't.

My .02........YMMV

I'm trying to figure out where this stigma arose. When navy shirts were introduced in MLB in 1996, they were worn with black hats.

Way to much is made of this. I agree just match!

It is not a sin!

Most in my area wear black bags. The primary shirt colour is navy with powder blue as an option.

Unless you're working south of Ft. Hancock, TX, wear a plate coat and don't worry about ball bags. If you're worried about being too hot in AZ or FL, wear a cooling vest.

A friend of mine who can get almost anything within reason will find one for you if you want, but try on your own first. He marks everything up twenty percent.

Agreed....No ball bags needed when I wear the Plate Coat....easy solution....and the pockets are bigger than ball bags....

I only wear black ball bags now and black hats. Putting navy in my bag just takes up space for something I'm never going to truly need. I really don't think either option looks that bad even if they are mixed and matched. Heck Feildin Culbreth wears navy bags with a black hat every day and even true umpire junkies don't notice that half the time.
