So I just got back from calling 2 FED select ball games.

I had the dish for the second game and here is the situation. Not sure if it was kicked, but I think so.

Score is 4-5, VT is down by 1 top 7.

R1 and R3, 1 out.

Batter hits ball to extreme deep left field. R3 tags and comes across the plate, however R1 kept running and never tagged at all, he was nearly to third base. The defense throws back to 1st to get the 3rd out on R1.

However, R3 crossed well before they got the out on R1. Everyone on the field, including my partner is calling ballgame and running off the field. I didn't say anything, but I couldn't help but think this was a time play and the run should have scored and we should have played on,

On the way back to the cars we discussed it and he insisted it didn't score, used the old "it's a force play", which we all know it is not.

So was I the only person thinking correctly on the entire ball field, or am I crazy?

The run scores. If that run ties the game, play on

You are crazy but you were correct.

Guilty as charged. It was the weirdest feeling though. Like when you show up for a meeting and no one is there yet, but you know you have the right time and place.

Just a bizarro day o' baseball.

On top of the fact we had a rat coach who I should have tossed, and I regret not doing it.

As PU, it's your job to score the run.

"Run scores! Run scores! Score that run!"

I understand that you weren't sure of yourself, so it's hard to make that call with confidence. You know now for next time.

Honestly, that is the first time in my 7 yrs i have had that kind of situation. If it hadn't been the last out of the game I think we would have gotten it right.

I just need to trust my rules knowledge next time. The realization dawned so slowly on me that everyone was running off the field by the time I digested the play.

Thanks for the advice grayhawk.

You need to file a TASO rule misapplication report on those guys if they don't see the light.

I think it definitely needs to be brought up and emphasized at our meetings. I will discuss it with our leadership at some point. I know the rule and I will make sure I teach every guy I work with the rules as well. Whether 2 years or 20.

I just realized we screwed up another appeal play in the 1st game.

Situation:

R2 and 2 outs. Batter laces a double to the gap but misses 1st base on the way. R2 scores. The defense appeals properly and I bang the runner out for the 3rd out. The coach goes ballistic and comes out on me. I made a mistake and said the words "I thought he missed it" instead of just saying "he missed the bag". He jumped all over it and started going to town. After all is said and done we move on. But I was a moron and we let the run stand instead of removing it even though someone specifically asked me if the run scored.

It didn't even occur to me it was the 3rd out at 1st base.

Rest assured I will get it right next time. Two different appeal plays at 1st in 1 day. One the run scores, the other the run doesn't. Fun stuff.
