First year umpire. Blessed, by the grace of God, with confidence from my friend and UIC, CMCNJ UMPIRE, and thus have had 1 championship game on the bases, 1 behind the plate, and this Saturday, Lord willing, will call my first LL District Tournament game.

I'm having a blast! Thank you Lord!

congrats ....

first of all, remember .... your faith is great, and I commend you for having such strong faith, but believe in yourself.  God's just there to help guide the way, ..he's not making it happen...YOU ARE! :)

Good luck and don't suck! LOL :D

With all respect and gratitude, and at the risk of triggering a theological conversation in perhaps an inappropriate place, I'm instructed by the Word of God (Christ), through the word of God (the Bible) - 5 I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing. - The Holy Bible: English Standard Version. (2001). (Jn 15:5). Wheaton: Standard Bible Society.

At any rate though, there are a bunch of people involved in my growth, many of whom I've never met, except on Umpire-Empire. This site is an incredible resource, so thanks to all who contribute!

my comment still holds true for myself.  also, my comment does not interfere or contradict with this verse

It was during the LL district tournament that I got "the bug" to be an umpire.  It was the first time I was exposed to umpires that took it seriously, and took pride in what they were doing.  There are some really good "LL only" umpires in this area, and I am thankful that some of my initial training was as a result of working with them.

Have fun and soak it all up!

Interesting.  The bug bit me after watching Smitty.

Me too. After watching Smitty do my son's games through high school, I knew I could do better and already knew the game better than 1/2 the guys I saw out there. It was also the best way to stay close to the game after the kids were done playing. Never realized how "severe" that "bite" would be though.

I am like @Richvee and @sdix00

I watched and paid some terrible umpires over the years. Coaching was getting a little old. Parents were getting to me and I felt I could do at least as good of a job as 90% of the umpires I was watching and paying at the Legion Ball level. So I jumped in. My first game was a HS varsity game with two future Major Leaguers playing. Nick Maronde-Angels pitching and Ben Revere-Twins/Phillies. What a start. It's been great so far and I am usually charged up to work my next game regardless of level. I've worked at four professional stadiums, one was MLB and seen so many great plays and players. Whenever I'm down about some bad baseball being played or rats coaching or abusive terrible parents and fans I think about all the great things I've seen and been able to experience through baseball. That makes things alright in my head and heart.

Just found out my LL District game Saturday will be with the District UIC, who will be evaluating me. God will  provide! If you're inclined, pray.

@Rulekeep addresses some type of god in posting sometimes. It's just her god, but a god nevertheless! ;)

It's the Flying Spaghetti Monster.

So don't be selfish. The 'Monster' is other people's deity too.
