Pickoff attempt - Dead Ball?

I know you guys can answer this for me.

USSSA 11U, 50/70, OBR.

Pickoff attempt to first base, throw hits R1 on the backside as he dives back to 1st base. Umpires call ball dead.

Correct call? Runner could have gone to 2nd base as ball went into foul ground.

I doubt he called dead ball on the throw.  The ball must have been dead, and not put back into play prior to the throw.

Hitting the runner is nothing. There must have been more to it.

Did he say anything to the pitcher, I suspect it could have been a balk WARNING(not a balk call, that would give runner a base)

I wish there was more. But both umps said the ball is dead when it hit the runner. Made no sense to me. I didn't get a chance to ask them post game but I see them often and I will certainly get their interpretation.

If you have not figured it out yet  @Thunderheads and @cyclonehokiece by their emoticons are letting you know that these 2 umpires erred in their application of their rules knowledge. It made no sense to you because it makes no sense and is incorrect.

All I'm thinking is that maybe they killed it because R1 was potentially injured???
