I worked a tournament a few weeks back not even knowing the guy…………  He asked me for a ride to the field and back i kept on making excuses….. THe next day he does it again and gives me a lecture on some bs about officiating ethics and thought to myself I don't even know you.

WHat would some of you guys do in that situation?

Seems a little bizarre....nothing in my officiating book of ethics includes taxi service. Now, if he's in a real bind and it's convenient AND someone I know can vouch for him, maybe I'll pitch in. But if he just doesn't want to drive and is going to lord it over me like that? Start hitchhiking, buddy.

We have neither a general moral duty nor a duty under any official's code of ethics to transport our officiating partners. If you choose to help a brother out, that's usually a good thing, but above and beyond.

Is it just a random guy, or someone in your association who you don't happen to know?  Is it such a distance that driving together makes sense?

He claimed he lived on the way to the park but he did not

Sure he did, just not the way you were driving...

;)

Sounds like a peach. If you ignore him, maybe he'll go away...

I bet he doesn't have a drivers license due to DUI or something like that.

I have to bum rides all the time and I don't have a DUI. Granted, I'm not that pushy but maybe he honestly doesn't have a way to get to the field.

What a brotherhood! :blah

You make up excuses, a euphemism for lie, and then get bent out of shape when he mentions ethics.

You're working together?  Why not give him a ride?

Maybe he's out of a job?, doesn't own a car?

What am I missing that this guy deserves such "brotherly" love?

Add to my message above -- I'm sure someone in Detroit know him or of him (at least the assigner for the tourney) and you'll get a better response as to the real reason then asking a bunch of strangers hundreds or thousands of miles away.

I would of honestly asked him while he was giving his speech about ethics, what is the deal? You don't have a ride? You have DL problems? You only have 1 car and your wife/girlfriend using it? Then I would of said you know I really don't know you at all, if you are straight forward with me about your issue then I don't mind helping you out, but don't feed me some BS about ethics just be straight forward everyone one has hiccups in life but I'm not the one to judge you on it. Then if he tells me really what's going on I tell him to hop in and I will give you a ride..." Oh Yea I Need 5 For Gas" lol JK
