Well this thread went haywire. Can someone show me to the official ruling on this?

It is right next to the rule that says the pitcher does not have to tell the batter what kind of pitch he is going to throw....  More seriously, there is nothing in the rules to require it, so the pitcher doesn't have to do it -- anyone that thinks it is a requirement should show where the requirement comes from

F1 is trying to legally deceive the batter so my present the ball.<br />Plus it is pretty obvious the pitcher has the ball.

That's the thing about softball.  You come walking up to the field thinking, "Hey, this looks like it'll be a lot like baseball!"  But then the game starts, and it's not...

Next thing you know the girls in the dugout are doing some kind of choreographed dance/cheer thing to support their batter.

I was calling a 12U game just this past week wherein the VT all had a "giddy cheer huddle" on the mound at the start of the HT's half-inning at bat, and repeated when an out was made with the bases empty. I remember remarking in my "just the plate" voice, "What, is this softball?", and the next batter looked at me with quizzingly, like he thinks it might have been funny, but he probably hasn't ever watched collegiate softball (or worse, high-school softball).

Lucky guy.

I had a compulsion, that I fought off valiantly, to take my spare baseball(s) from my ballbags and lob them towards the mound shouting "Ball change!", just to break it up.
