really depends on what your goals are............are you looking to go to get a crack at a pro job?..........although I'd never say never,  I'd say you are looking at an uphill fight......BUT if you go, you will come back a far better umpire!...and how bad could that be?

Plenty of guys here have gone and can give you a better answer than this, but trust me i wish I would have gone when I had the chance....I had no illusions of having gotten a pro job, but would have welcomed the training and the opportunities that it would have helped with along the way ...

best of luck in whatever you decide.

How old is too old to go to the pro umpiring schools? 36? too old?

typically, yes ........

...from an Evans Grad friend of mine .... and my primary partner ...@Trakes2 .....

MLB wants to get 20 years out of you ...so starting school in your 20's and getting into MLB by your early 30's is preferred

I am pretty sure I read the Jim Evans school is 5 weeks in length. How much does going to a school cost?

There are no age limits in attending The Umpire School. We accept all students, regardless of age or experience. During our program, all students will be evaluated against the rest of the class. Students must have the physical ability to participate in a training program that requires frequent voice projection, stretching, bending, squatting, jogging, sprinting, and standing for periods of three hours or more and participate in a daily conditioning program of medium-impact aerobics designed to exercise and strengthen muscle groups most utilized by umpires.

The road to the Major Leagues is a very challenging one. After attending one of the two qualifying schools –THE UMPIRE SCHOOL or The Wendelstedt Umpire School – only the top percentage of students advance to the Professional Baseball Umpire Corporation (PBUC) Evaluation Course. During that time, candidates receive additional education, field work, testing and interviews. At the conclusion of the course, candidates are ranked from number 1 through the end. As positions become available in Minor League Baseball, candidates begin their careers at the Rookie level and hope to work their way up through the ranks, eventually getting to Triple A within 6-8 years. Once in Triple A, Major League Baseball takes over your supervision, and within 1-3 years will determine if you could be a fit into getting your first big league experience (Arizona Fall League, MLB Spring Training, MLB regular season fill-in).

The majority of our students do not qualify for the PBUC Evaluation Course, as only the top 15-30 advance. But for those who do not qualify, there are numerous opportunities in amateur and independent baseball. After completing our program, our goal is to get you the opportunity to work the highest levels within your ability. Many of our students work the top levels of high school, college and independent baseball. The biggest challenge is finding the contacts for the right association in your area. But after four weeks of high intensity training, you’ll be able to prove your ability at tryouts for college associations. And we can also assist in finding independent league contacts.

Please feel free to contact us anytime to answer more questions. Attending The Umpire School is a major decision and cost. Our goal is to provide you the information you need to assist in making that decision. We can be reached at 877-799-UMPS(8677).

Straight answer 36, yes, is too old.  If you want to learn to umpire the Professional mechanics way then go.  If you go with getting a job mentality, don't go.  Remember every umpire school or clinic is a business.  Businesses are created to make money.  They will tell you what you want to hear so they can get in your pocket.

About the Evans situation as I see it and this is my opinion, and you all know what I say about opinions, the bowling alley incident was used as a subterfuge or a scape goat to take Evans out of the picture in the umpire training business.  I can't believe how objective can be, be trained by PBUC, then be send to PBUC evaluation and offered a job to work for PBUC as a MiLB umpire.  They were the jury and executioner of the job done by Wendelstedt and Evans.  Now they become judges too after The Umpire School creation.

I have to add let the Judicial System decide in a court of Law.  I'm part of the court of public opinion.  @Thunderheads :stir so you don't complain about the fuel.

You obviously didn't get to hear the story behind the bowling alley...I know a few of the guys that were present.

So you are questioning the integrity of PBUC and it's staff? You don't understand. PBUC doesn't care if you're a Harry's grad of TUS grad. Their job is to put the best product on the field. Period.

I attended at age 36 and it was great. Not chosen, but kind of expected that at 36. Minor league ball is not a young mans game as they would like you to put in many years developing your skills before the big promotion, just like any industry.  However, it is more than worth the time and money to go to school. You're not going to get this information from a three day advanced clinic.

I'm 53 and considering going to pro school.  Of course, I'm not looking to get a job (for obvious reasons).   Rather, to learn and to improve my umpiring skills which will enable me to get to the next level(s).  It's just a matter of me taking a leave from work to do so.  That's the only sticking point for me.

Like a lot of guys out here will say...I wish I knew about these schools 30 years ago.

I wish I would have known 20 years ago, what I know now. I would have saved every penny to go to Pro School. Now, unfortunately, that ship has sailed. But I am still working to be the best Umpire I can be.
