Can someone give me a rules reference in OBR and USSSA for the use of bat warmers? Legal or illegal?

Posted

OBR isn't going to have anything specific because it only allows for wooden bats.  Youd need to decide whether 6.06(d) applies:

(d) He uses or attempts to use a bat that, in the umpire’s judgment, has been altered or

tampered with in such a way to improve the distance factor or cause an unusual

reaction on the baseball. This includes, bats that are filled, flat-surfaced, nailed,

hollowed, grooved or covered with a substance such as paraffin, wax, etc.

No advancement on the bases will be allowed and any out or outs made during a

play shall stand.

In addition to being called out, the player shall be ejected from the game and may

be subject to additional penalties as determined by his League President.

Rule 6.06(d) Comment: A batter shall be deemed to have used or attempted to use an illegal

bat if he brings such a bat into the batter’s box.

You can leave a bat in the sun on a 100 degree day but you can't use a bat warmer? How stupid is that?

In Fed it is illegal to set your bats out in the sun.

So you're going to say to a team that has a couple bats out of the dugout on a sunny day to bring them inside the dugout (before the game begins) and then use the above cite as to why if quesitoned???

The way it was put to us at a collegiate camp is that if you see a team putting bats on top of the dugout in the sun then make your call.

Ok ... that's a little different than having bats generically out of the dugout in the sun .... THAT would be leaning towards intentional for sure

We have those plastic portable fold-up bat racks that hook onto the fence. And it's often in the sun.  Now what?

And besides, on a 100 degree day the bats will be at 100 degrees anyhow.

It may have mattered before bats were tested to make sure they stayed in spec.

This is the rule i used and deemed it illegal it was 85 degrees outside in Texas no need for the warmer.

Apparently USSSA endorses one specific type of Bat-Warmer. http://batwarmer.com/pdf/USSSA-PressRelease.pdf

Therefore, I would assume they are legal in USSSA.

This was the exact warmer they used.  I have since went back and looked through the USSSA rules and they have no amendments to overrule 6.06D so I will continue to enforce this rule against the bat warmers until an amendment to the rules is in place!

i received an email that was forwarded to me from the manufacturer of the warmer the day after I enforced this apparently the dad called them and complained.  They sent a copy of the press release but no rules citation overruling so they can still bite me and I am going to enforce the rule!
