I don't mind being called "Blue" at all. He told me his name too, but I call him "Coach." If we were like for like he'd call me "Umpire." I think that's worse!

As you move up, not only should you address coaches by name, but you are expected to. I make it a point to remember 4 names in every game: both head coaches and both catchers.

If I can take the time to remember two coaches and two catchers, I would appreciate them not calling me a color. But we discussed this at length some time ago.... so I will now STFU.

Pretty close - the travel teams from Ontario and Quebec call us "Umpy" during summer tournament season. Always an interesting one to hear.

Not in any of the three states I've worked.  I'm new to this forum but not to umpiring.  I do remember their names, and write them down (catchers too!) but "coach" is a title of respect IMO.  In fact, when I see them off the field I call them "coach" as well.  I haven't worked above the D3 level--by choice/schedule/availabiliy, not opportunity--but the familiarity of first names called out across the field has been an issue.  When we're 3 feet away talking I use their first names and they use mine and that's fine, but if I'm calling over to the dugout from 50 feet away, it's "Coach."  I can completely understand not liking being called "blue."  It just doesn't bother me unless there's context, but "Blue, that was the worst call I've ever seen!" is no different than "Mark, that was the worst call I've ever seen!"  Of course no one's ever actually said either of those to me...

I was taught to always use first names for HCs, regardless of what they call me, with two acceptable alternatives:  'Skip' (short for skipper, which means the boss of the team), or Coach [his last name].  Works for me.

 

I don't get all riled up about being called Blue.  I perceive that as a sign of inexperience rather than disrespect.  "Call it both ways" is one thing I will address the first time I hear it.  That is a direct shot to my integrity.

That's funny. We worked a tournament last year with a team from ONtario and the coaches called me "umpy". I thought it was hilarious. My partner hated it.
