I just saw the Josh Hamilton replay ruling from last night's Angels game and don't understand the ruling. I am not an ump, I am a coach, but I thought when a fielder gloves the ball, possesses it, and is attempting to take the ball out of his glove, a catch has been completed. To me, this is clearly what Hamilton did - he caught the ball, turned his glove to his throwing hand as a clear act of starting to removing the ball, then dropped it. The play was originally rule a catch, but then overturned. I believe I have seen similar plays a thousand times at second base with a fielder trying to turn a double play. It has always been ruled an out. Has the rule changed? I would appreciate some expert insight into what I do not understand about the catch rule. Thanks!
