As long as it is kept in the context of the fact that it is just a statistic, no matter how high or low the statistic and everyone keeps in mind that good umpires all over the country at every level and speed of play are making the exact same percentage of correct calls, incorrect calls, and calls that are too close to be determined as the statistics we are keeping. It should not be used as a tool to try and point fingers at any group of umpires to try and prove they are superior, excellent, average, below average or inferior. Statistically speaking, what the statistics will show for this level is exactly what is occurring at all levels, good or bad. If used for the above reason, I am all for it.

If it is used as a tool to bust on the MLB umpires, under some false belief that they should never miss a call, even an obvious miss, and to try and deride them and put them down, then I would not be in favor. I would not be for it, if the College or High School guys had IR but the Pros did not, if it was used as just a tool to belittle any group.

And no, I am not saying anybody on this board has any intentions of belittling someone, but we do get new members quite frequently, and if belittling any group of umpires is on their mind, hopefully they will seek out other avenues and places where the sole intent is to deride, belittle, and put down umpires is the thing to do at that place or site.

Also, let's remember, just like before IR when they would replay a call that could not be overturned, we already knew the umpires miss calls, sometimes by just a little and sometimes by more than a little. We have to remember umpires will be correct and incorrect with some calls that are not even challenged.

All the MLB umpires have started the ding system for the chance to work the playoffs this year. They have been keeping score for years now, even when there was no IR. The top 32 or whatever with the new system will advance to the playoffs. They may have to go deeper than a set number if some umpires have injuries that occur at playoff time that knock them out of the running.

We're presently at 8-for-14 (I tally from the umpire's point of view, so that's 8-of-14 affirmed calls). The present overturn rate is accordingly 43%.

The sample size will be far too small to draw meaningful analysis from the data through at least July, at best, the entire season more likely. By then, MLB probably will change the rule anyway.

Surprised more aren't overturned because the clubs can see the replay and tell the manager to challenge or not. If they had no benefit of seeing the replay first, I suspect there would be more confirmed/stands calls.

I only show 13 challenges.  Here's what I have in order:

1.  Davidson

2.  Gibson Overturn

3.  Davidson Overturn

4.  Fagan

5.  Winters

6.  Blaser Overturn

7.  Wolf

8.  Wolf

9.  Guccione

10.  Conroy Overturn

11.  Conroy Overturn

12.  Scott Overturn

13.  Wegner

Maybe 14 is out there tonight?

We had nine—yes, nine—replay reviews tonight and all of them were Manager's Challenges. The grand total is now 18, of which eight were overturned (44%).

I have seen a couple reviews where they overturned a call, and honestly, it didn't seem like overwhelming evidence to me.

So, question -

What is the standard to overturn the call?  Is it like the NFL, where it must be irrefutable evidence?  Or is it like giving the call to another umpire and asking for his opinion, independent of what the call was originally?

I have not read the details on the criteria for overturning a call. Can someone link me to them?  Are the criteria in the rule book?

To get the "correct call" percentage you need to get the overturns portion of total calls, not just the challenged ones.

And I've seen enough baseball in my life to know that the correct call rate is a lot higher in the pros. That's why they're there.

And as everyone else in the game is measured by their effectiveness at their task and demoted or cut if they don't measure up, why not the umpires?
