Yesterday, I went to the Stanford-Vanderbilt baseball game. 

 

The catcher wanted the pitcher to throw a curveball. Well, the pitcher didn't know that and he gave him a 95 MPH heater. The catcher or batter never touched the ball, and that pitch hit the plate ump square on the mask. He fell back, and was knocked out for a minute or two. He tried to lift his arms so he could sit up, but went right back down. The stadium was silent. It was so silent that if you were sitting in a seat behind the plate, you could hear a mouse fart in the left field bleachers. Anyways, there was a 20 minute delay so he wouldn't move around and make his injury worse. The EMT's came and he was carefully walked off the field. Today,  he was at third base and seemed fine, but I'm sure he had a concussion.

 

By the way, he was wearing a Dyna-Lite mask.

A foul ball to the mask ended AAA umpire Angel Compos season last year.  Regardless of the mask you can still get seriously injured.  I worked a college scrimmage with Angel a few weeks ago and he says that he is coming back this season. I wish him luck in his quest to become full-time in MLB.

And how many conferences are baseline testing the umpires in NCAA or any other level, like they do the players? Hopefully, with several medical facilities in the area, he was checked, tested and received the OK to go back on Saturday. This is an issue that they might as well deal with now, rather than with a lawsuit later. Also, the umpires themselves should take it on their own to look after themselves. Now that we know a heck of a lot more about concussions and CTE later on, everyone must have an action plan, as the information is out there. The concussion issue is probably playing a part in the all the "clean sliding non contact" provisions being introduced in the game, in addition to actually injuries suffered to other parts of the body due to contact. At least the SEC has 4 umpires, so that if 1 umpire has to leave, they are left with 3 and the superior coverage a 3 man offers versus a 2 man. In this case Kennedy moved from 3rd and Darrell Arnold, and Scott Cline took care of the bases.

 

We can go all over the wussification issue, but how many guys wear the old equipment anymore and we are not even talking about the masks. Go check out what the senior and retired MLB, CCA, NF umpires had to wear in the old days. It was a lesser form of the Carlucci (soft shell and they are still out there to this day if you want one) and the shin guards were less than the Carlucci's,  they took the hits and kept on going. They had bar masks in the old days also. Now-days, if you want to talk wussification, let's check and see how many wear that old type uniform when the pitching gets above 90. If they could do it, we could do it, but do we?, heck no, so the wuss issue is off the table with equipment and so it should be with the concussion issue and being checked at all levels. Now, if they want to avoid any future legal entanglements, then they just have all the umpires, players, etc., sign a waiver that takes the liability issue off the table, plain and simple?? and put the liability right back on the participants, players, umpires, etc. Play and get any repercussions it is on you. If you do not want repercussions, then do not play. Find some other athletic endeavor.

I am not a Vandy fan but the best college baseball game I saw live  was at Vanderbilt in a regional CWS matchup against Austin Peay. David Price for Vandy and Austin Peays ace that was a 2nd round pick by the Pirates. Also AP had a great catcher AJ Ellis, now of the Dodgers in that game. A 10 inning great pitching battle that both coaches left the starters in the entire 10 innings. Vandy won 2-1 in the bottom of the 10th.

I may have been mistaken. Looking at his mask, the bars are somewhat thinner than Dyna-Lite and it could even be a chrome moliben

I don't see how his setup would be considered 'in the slot.' That's a heck of a shot to take, but can any vets here explain his positioning over the catcher/middle of the plate?

Thats not the slot.  Not to say you don't get hit in the slot.  Is he OK now?  First concussion I got was in a Wilson Titanium with Wilson Wrap Around Pads. Can still feel it now.
