2014 Rules Test

I know we have a discussion going on in the Rules section of the board about another test question, but I wanted to post a few more questions that I had trouble with and see what you guys have.  I don't want answers, but if anyone has rule citations or can jog my memory on any of these, go for it.  I will post them in separate posts to keep them organized.  Just quote that post when answering...

 

 

The batting order is Able, Baker, Charles, Daniels. Charles bats instead of Baker and singles to center field. Baker comes to bat and singles sending Charles to third base. The defense appeals that Baker batted out of turn.

 

• a.
  • Daniels is declared out and Charles is returned to first.

 

• b.
  • Baker and Daniels are both declared out and Charles is returned to first.

 

• c.
  • Baker is declared out and Charles is the next batter.

 

• d.
  • Baker is declared out and Charles is returned to first

 

If the defense had appealed the BOO after Charles completed his turn at bat, the proper batter (Baker) would have been called out and Charles would be the next batter.  The appeal doesn't come until after Baker bats though, so was Daniels supposed to be the proper batter and Baker batted in his place, so Daniels would be out?

The DH is called out on strikes to end the bottom of the 4th inning and subsequently is ejected from the game for arguing balls and strikes.

• a.
  • Due to the ejection, the DH spot in the line-up is terminated for the remainder of the game.

• b.
  • If the head coach does not announce the replacement for the ejected DH immediately, he shall be ejected.

• c.
  • Require the head coach to inform the plate umpire immediately, of the name of the replacement for the DH that was just ejected from the game.

• d.
  • The new designated hitter does not have to be announced until his next time at bat.

 It's C or D, but I've looked through the substitution part of the book several times and can't find this one.  Is it mentioned somewhere else in the book?

The defensive team is using a nine-player lineup. The defensive team does not list a P/DH on their lineup. During a mound conference, the head coach wants S1 to replace F1 and S2 to replace F9 but have them swap positions in the batting order.

• a.
  • The head coach may not make such a substitution.

• b.
  • The head coach must inform the plate umpire before signaling for S2.

• c.
  • The head coach must inform the plate umpire before leaving the field.

• d.
  • The head coach must inform the umpire of his intention before crossing the foul line on the way to the mound

 

 

 

They are using a 9-player lineup and don't list a P/DH, so the pitcher is automatically the DH also.  I am thinking C.  The subs aren't replacing defensive positions, they're replacing spots in the order, so S2 would take the P/DH's spot in the order, while S1 would take F9's spot.

Yup - 7-11-a(2) pretty much covers it.  The pitch to Baker legitimizes Charles, so proper batter is next in lineup after Charles.

Not sure about NCAA, but I've seen Mattingly mess this up. You have to tell PU before you signal for the replacement pitcher.

I think D is correct. They discussed this in Phill that a DR doesn't have to be named until his next at bat.

Question, and I havent gone into my rule book yet, does the DH or P/DH have to be listed at the beginning of the game? Or can the HC come to you and tell you that he new wants to list F1 as a DH as well or have F1 become the DH in the middle of the game without the priginal designation whe lone ups were exchanged.

I always thought he could... but now I cant remember.

If it's not listed (and it should be caught at the plate meeting)...the pitcher is also the DH.
