MLB Tests Expanded Instant Replay at Arizona Fall League

Umpire-Empire locks topics which have not been active in the last year. The thread you are viewing hasn't been active in 4579 days so you will not be able to post. We do recommend you starting a new topic to find out what's new in the world of umpiring.

Let them replace umpires.  MLB will love how many turn the game off then.  If the ones who call for IR think the game is long and boring now, wait for IR. I suspect the average fan will find something else to do once this happens.  Why have more than one just to call INT or OBS?

They just reviewed a HBP/foul ball call. (Ball hit batter's hand). Could have sworn they said this wasn't going to be reviewable

They are trying losts of different things to see what works and what doesnt.; Dont take anything they do or anything they dont do or how they do anyting to be anything official.

Caught the tail end of last nights game.  Both announcers had a lot of nice things to say about the crew considering they were the guinea pigs for IR.

I saw one of the review plays last night, with a guy trying to extend a single to a double. The call of out was upheld, and just thought it was perfect for a master class on timing. On the head first dive from the runner, he got to the bag before the tag, but the tag was maintained as the runner's momentum took him off the bag. I know plenty of guys would have blown it on that one, either calling safe then changing it to out, or just leaving it as safe - assuming they didn't get lucky and guess out first time. And by the way, I include myself in the group who could have booted it.

I watched a bunch of the games this week. That SS, Nick Ahmed is one hell of a polished fielder. Good example on that play as he kept the tag on the runner all the way through. He was fun to watch. Hope his bat comes around so we see him in the pros soon.

At the end of the clip they say the umpire's truck said they were reviewing to see if he dropped it on the transfer, but to me, it looks like they should have reviewed the "neighborhood play" aspect of this as well.

What do you guys think, will this still be an out next year?

I don't see any reason to change this particular call based on the video and no one knows what is going to happen next year in terms of what will be reviewable or not and certainly not in terms of when a manager might choose to ask for a review.

Absolutely correct. Part of the problem is the umpires and players haven't signed off on it so even if they have a plan of could change. Sort of like going to conference committee in congress.<br /><br />Sent from my C771 using Tapatalk 2<br /><br />

During the AFL trial, one of the instructions to managers was to specify precisely which portion of the play they were challenging, e.g. out (glove/transfer) or the out (foot/tag). If the manager elected to challenge the glove/transfer portion of this play, pursuant to how replay was set up during the trial run, the foot/tag would not be reviewed. Like the rest of replay, there will be tweaks - it's not yet clear whether MLB will fall in line with several other sports and review all aspects of the play or whether it will be left at a la carte dependent on manager's specific challenge. Neighborhood is one of many aspects of replay (including the unforeseen) not yet clear.

I see nothing in this clip that would cause an overturn.

But, the more serious problem that relates to baseball and umpiring is the concussion issue.

This will cause many more job openings for both the players and the umpires at the catching position and the PU position because of the immediate care and days off needed to recover from even the slightest symptoms of head trauma and getting the person off the field immediately to start the healing process. It will get to where 2 or maybe even 3 catchers or umpires take a shot in the game and have to leave the playing field. That will at least cause a situation of needing more "call up" umpires or the number of games they get even if they do not get a full time job. It will also cause more jobs needed for catchers at all levels as they have to keep bailing out with this type of injury and recovery. It will also open up more MiLB jobs. This will also cause shorter careers for both players and umpires and therefor more job openings and retirements, just like several hockey players who have taken hits and been told it is time to leave the game by their doctors or else the doctors cannot guarantee a future hit would not cause permanent debilitating injury.

This just happened to a race car driver also.
