I'm looking to advice first year umpire(s) on low cost/zero deductible liability insurance (officiating related personal injury also would be nice).

Any suggestions where the best deals/coverages are at?

The ABUA $45 membership has a $1000 deductible on their $3 million policy.

I found that USSSA has a $90 membership, zero deductible, $2 million policy for all baseball leagues.

Those are for umpire individual liability coverage.

To cover games other that U-trip, it costs an extra $25

ABUA $3 million/$1,000 deductible $45/yr

ABUA $3 million/Zero deductible $75/yr

USSSA $2 million/zero deductible $90/yr

That's what I've found so far.

NASO is $103. I know there's a $19 discount through Arbiter, but that offer may have expired. NASO comes with Referee Magazine. My HS association, for this upcoming season, has included NASO in it's $135 membership fee, so that is what I will have for 2014. I believe NASO insurance covers all sports (though I only umpire baseball).

Is there a reason that $0 deductible is important? I would be curious to know how many U-E members have had to use their liability insurance. I would think game-fee replacement would be more likely to be used (due to injury).

My state HS Asso. includes liability insurance. My son (first year umpire) was zipping balls back to F1 yesterday and I had to keep closing my eyes (I didn't want to see an 11 y.o. mis-catch one in the face). We talked about not doing that anymore and getting liability insurance to cover any catostrophic event. The $1000 deductible isn't a deal-breaker, but if a zreo deductible is available for not much added premium, it might be worth getting.

We have gotten to be a very legitious country. Many sports officials go over-the-top to keep from being sued. I want to act responsibly, but I don't want to get to where I'm taking "unreasonable" precautions (though now-a-days, there is no such thing as "unreasonable"). If something bad happens, no matter how freak the accident, someone is going to look for somebody else to take responsibility. With liability insurance, you need to worry less.

Agreed that liability insurance is a MUST as a sports official. The deductible is one of those things that you're glad it's $0 if you have a claim, but wish you hadn't paid more if you didn't have a claim. Sounds like the difference is about $40-$50 per year. I'd probably just give them each option and then they can decide which policy is right for them.

Pretty sure the cheapest out there is ABUA. It's $45 per year - baseball only. Not sure about the deductible.

I believe ABUA changed to covering all sports a couple years ago.

NASO covers anything with rules. It also has assault insurance. I have never used mine, but have friends that have used theirs.

Sent from my C771 using Tapatalk 2

@ricka56 You should have Mark join the chapter this year and then he will be covered for anything he might need. Even if he doesn't call many HS games it would still be worth it. He's good enough to handle freshman and JV games plus the experience he would get would be very beneficial to him. Just a little tip from experience if you get a game or two scheduled with him give them back. Dad and I ran into that problem last year and let's just say that when the slightly added pressure of HS baseball enters the picture the father son on field bonding time isn't quite as fun as it is at TCA.
