Disclaimer:  I've been primarly a softball umpire due to the lack of decent baseball in recent years in my area.  I started out working baseball however.

As such, I was ALWAYS taught to tuck in my jacket.  It looks more professional.  There are also several members of our softball group who tuck theirs in.

I recently worked the dish in a fall SB tournament with a college umpire, who insisted that softball "prohibits" umpires from wearing their jackets tucked in.  I was instructed to untuck my jacket prior to going on the field.   I did (what a mistake) and I felt like a slob.  Never again.  An untucked jacket behind the plate is functionally horrible while reaching in your ball bag or pockets.

But who is "right" Mike? :fuel:

Everyone is right.

Tuck or untuck! Who cares.

Do what your association says to do. As of now. We are not required to tuck so I never ever ever never ever tuck.

When you are in personal clothes out in public do you tuck your jacket.? It looks really stupid. JMHO

Some jackets are meant to be tucked, and others are not.  Wearing a jacket untucked that is meant to be tucked looks HORRIBLE.

I agree! So just don't buy a Tuckable Jacket!!!!

I'm with Jax (partially)...do what your UIC or asso colleagues say.

It only looks stupid if the crew is not in uniform.

This MLB crew: http://bleacherreport.com/articles/1617283-umpire-gets-hit-flush-in-the-groin-with-a-fastball-at-angels-game,

Had, as far as I could tell, PU tucked with a long sleeve jacket or shirt, two guys tucked but bloused over the pants so you only knew they where tucked when they bent over to check on the PU, and one untucked with the knit wasteband showing. The worst look IMHO is untucked with the waistband showing. If your on the plate tuck your long sleeve shirt ( even if you thought it was a jacket when you bought it). If your on the bases tuck the waistband and blouse or fold under the knit elastic and blouse. The worst look is the waistband showing.

The college clinic I attended wanted jackets not tucked anywhere but if you wanted warmth, a long sleeve shirt, layered and tucked on the plate.

I know there is a long debate on jackets being tucked/untucked. Are you telling me there are guys saying to not tuck LS shirts? I can't imagine anyone saying that, that is nuts.

What was said was that jackets should not be tucked. If you need warmth at the plate and an untucked jacket presented a problem with ball bags, wear a LS shirt (tucked as usual) layered underneath for warmth.

I like what the PU was wearing in the MLB game. I haven't seen something like that for sale though.

I had a "senior"umpire tell me jackets should always be tucked in. I disagreed, but bowed to his preference when working an early-season game with him last season. I must admit, tucking in a plate coat is a pain in the butt.....

I NEVER tuck in my Hawaiian shirt, when I work the bases with one.

BOS - DET tonite 10/17: U1 - Jacket with blue stripe untucked but knit waistband folded or tucked under

U2 - Jacket untucked with waistband showing in front (worst look IMHO)

U3 - same as U1

PU - long sleeve shirt (possibly made with a jacket type material) with no stripes tucked in.

U1 was Danny boy and he never tucks his jacket in and always looks pretty sharp. U2 was Cowboy Joe and generally he doesn't tuck his in but sometimes he does. Tonight he started the game untucked, tucked it in, and then finished the game with it untucked. U3 was Rob Drake (who has the best hair in baseball as far as I'm concerned) and he never tucks his jacket in. PU was Dale Scott and he wore a standard Majestic long sleeve (which of course is always tucked in.) it did appear more shiny than usual because it was soaked in the rain. In the MLB the PU will always wear a shirt (long or short) or a plate coat. Only in very rare situations will you ever see a PU in any type of professional baseball wear a jacket when working the stick. That is usually when an umpire or his crew is starting a new series or just returned from vacation time and something happens to their equipment in transit.

As for the tucked vs untucked argument I have to say that untucked is the way to go. I wear the Majestic thermabase jackets and the Majestic convertible jackets when I'm on the bases and they are designed to not be tucked in. I have always thought that a tucked in jacket looks very unprofessional and unless you're using one of the pull over style jackets with the open nonelastic bottom like Smitty, Honigs, and +pos sell your jacket should always be untucked. Just my  :2cents:
