Because most of the players are former college and ex-MiLB guys and it's somewhat competitive, I give them a little more rope with respect to their language unless it's personal.  Having said that, I probably would have issued a stern warning for a "That was f***ing bullSH*# call" instead of an immediate EJ.

 

Now, in an 18U game or below, I would have immediately ejected. 

 

I have never understood why umps think this way? If I am doing a game F**K YOU is the same coming from a 12 year old as a 40 year old. If you cuss me it is crossing that line and if anything an adult should know better.

 

 

Given your post, I think you don't see the difference between a comment directed at you and one directed at the call.

 

 

If the ump makes the call how is there a difference?

 

If a player or coach says to you "You missed that call", would you eject ? What if he said "You suck" ?

Knowing the difference is what helps you move up.

Don't feel like you did anything wrong. Just cause there older  and more comeptivie does not give them a right to be like that.  Now i understand what people are saying. But i think your ejection is spot on.

I'm going to say this again, as I've said this in another thread. If you eject for swearing in an adult game, it will be the first and last game you work at that level.

 

Good i wouldn't want to do that where the leuage allows for that kind of attuide.

Around here, we do a bunch of NABA games. College players, ex-college players, some mid-30's players, etc. generally zero problems. Also, we don't go looking for problems either, we only use experienced umpires in these leagues that have good game management skills.

Griping about a call is not a battle to fight. Griping about the man making the call is a different matter. Still, a firm "knock it off" goes a long way, too. Plus, don't forget, these guys are our customers, too.

Based soley on what you said, I wouldn't of necessarily done anything in your shoes, other than give a stare, and say nothing. Learn to let them speak their peace and leave. He didn't personally attack you. Sometimes, players know they messed up, and to deflect the grief they receive from their teammates/managers, they'll try to put it on you, or will just be frustrated, and bark because you are the proverbial "fluffy" in the room. Remember, they are in a heated contest, and so the competitive nature comes out. That being said, you shouldn't be anyone's punching bag either. One occurrence, let it go. If others start to chime in, then you have to draw a line somewhere, come out with the "That's enough!" and then be prepared to eject.

As a person who has scheduled umpires for both men's baseball and fast pitch you are 100% spot on correct.  Being too quick to eject is a one check deal for the ump.  Don't get me wrong abuse of umps isn't tolerated, the leagues I have been a part of prefer umps who give it back instead of eject.

Yeah that might have been a little quick. I don't do a lot of Men's League anymore. But when you are first starting out, it really teaches you patience, and game control. You can say things in a Men's League game, as an umpire, that you would never be able to get away with in a U18 or below game. But it is a great learning experience I think every umpire, who wants to get into High School Baseball and above, should go through. It will make you a better umpire. 

 

That being said, after a year or 2 of it, most Umpires will have enough of it. Just my opinion.

The issue I have seen is that too many green umps are sent out to do men's leagues.  Running a 14U zone in men's leagues with wood bats doesn't sit well with the players and the leagues.

 

I'll take men's league over high school any day.  It's a better game than high school and most of the time it's easier money (no whining moms) and pays better.

My experience is the complete opposite. The men's leagues are full of whiners, the HS games are much better and I've gotten used to the mom's asking where my post game party was at.

Adult leagues depend on how they are run. What you don't do us stick guys out there with no clue what they are doing. Whether it is bad baseball or good baseball, it involves guys that have played HS,many played college and some that played pro ball. The result is they expect a certain level of umpiring and sticking a guy out there that is just starting isn't fair to the league or the umpire.

Regarding the OP, I think it would depend on the inflection of the comment and where and how it is said. If the comment is made on anger and meant as a question of my ability to do my job, that mifght warrent an ejection. If it is said to the world in general, it would most likey get an admonishment from me for the batters actions and a shorter leash for at least the rest of the AB.
