Angel Hernandez on the ball again. Great lesson for always knowing where the ball is....and the pitcher!

Illustrates how announcers are often so quick to say, "That's a bad call!" when they don't know what happened, and are just guessing.  Then when they figure out what was actually going on, "That's a good job by the umpire, Angel Hernandez."

 

Meanwhile, what was the 3B coach doing??   He's asleep at the wheel.  Instead of telling Uribe that F5 has the ball, he just stands there.  Worse yet, he seems to lean over to get a good look at Uribe's foot and the tag!  Interesting because (1) he's not doing his job! and (2) the announcers either miss that entirely (perhaps in their zeal to bash the umpires), or they just don't realize the 3B coach made a terrible mistake.  Either way, nobody comments on it. Perhaps the coach thought time was out --- but again, that's a mistake.

I'll defend the announcers a little here. The tag was made with Uribe's foot just a hair off the bag. hard to tell exactly what was going on if you didn't watch real close. Thinking that they were tagging him to appeal leaving 2nd early isn't a stretch there. Granted, they jumped to the conclusion that that was the call, and were quick to start bashing the call. But, that's what they do best.

I'm with Rich. How many times have we all watched the game from the stands and tried to figure out exactly what call was being made and why? Sure, we have a better idea because we think about the situations in a different way than the average fan (or announcer), but there are still times when it's not easy to know exactly what transpired. On the play in question, it was more likely to be a leaving early appeal than a hidden ball trick, so it's hard to fault them for looking at the play from that perspective. After all, the play is called a "trick" for a reason...

As an aside, tonite Orel and his sidekick whoever he is were commenting on the HBT from last nite. His sidekick who was a pro commented that he did it multiple times at the college level and wanted to do it in the pros but, from what I could infer, professional courtesy ( my words) prevented him from trying it. If you think about it, most of the time after a hit and "relaxed action" they have time to replace the ball or reset the umpires. (resetting being my pet peeve but who am I to argue). Just watched a 3man indy league crew do the time out after every play. They looked good other than my pet peeve. Makes sense at that level so when somebody takes advantage of it you could call it "bush". But it was an out.
