I really sucked that last game. Way to quick. I was trying to slow down and just could not do it. I think the zone was decent. Not making excuses. 3rd game in a row and 4th of the day and haven't ate since breakfast. Thanks for all the feedback guys. It is very much appreciated. I beat. Bed time! After a good shower!

why/how on earth can't you eat since breakfast?  take care of yourself Rolando!

While CDP provides three square meals a day, sometimes (especially on certain days, like lasagna day) the meals go through you like squares. There is no "lite meal" or snack there. I was there for 4 weeks, and worked no less than 12 games per 5 days... And there were days I purposely avoided the meal tent. I don't blame Jax for possibly avoiding it too... It presents a conundrum – run on fumes, or not run at all because you have a brick in your gut?

its been 5yrs since I played at CDP, but I remember how bad the food was. I wont go into detail but lets just say it doesn't always agree with you. If you have 4games in a day the last thing you want is an upset stomach.

They have a salad bar.  I didn't mind the food.  After all, they are feeding about 1500 people three meals a day.  And you can always grab some Uncrustables if you prefer. :)

Oh, I'm not _complaining_ about the food, nor the folks that perform feats of magic to provide it (Ms. Elisabeth and her staff). I'm just "presenting a ruling (safe or out?)". For days like those, I just preferred to run on water and PowerBars (that I got from Tops) and Apple Juice boxes. It's how I kept pretty trim. ;)

  5. Long way from everywhere BUT NY

Trying NOT to be cynical BUT I have to be missing something.

Go to CDP next year the same week I go and your questions will be answered. Maybe we should have a UE CDP week.

It's kind of hard to explain.  You are immersed in a baseball environment surrounded by kids that are having the time of their lives.  If you view it as a week of lost potential income, or as having to slum in barracks eating what is essentially "camp food" for a week, then your attitude about it isn't where it should be and you shouldn't go in the first place.

I went last year as an umpire and my son was a player.  The team paid for my flight and rental car.  It was a special week with my son that I will never forget.  Would I spend a week's vacation to go there by myself at my current station of life?  No - I'm going to Hawaii with the family this summer instead.

If you go into it with the right mindset, enjoy baseball and umpiring and want to immerse yourself in it for a few days, then it's a hell of a fun week.

Sounds like fun for young umpires.

Looking for games/tournaments to send my young umpires to this time of year.

Absolutely.  Funny thing is that the guy in the bunk next to mine was 75 years old and goes every year.  Tough SOB doesn't even wear shin guards.  I joked that he was so old that his nerve endings were already dead.  Good guy and I enjoyed our conversations.

@grayhawk – I'm sitting here, refreshing the page waiting for someone (in particular) to post that that guy's _choice_ to not wear shin guards makes him less of an umpire.

@BigUmpire – It's baseball (lots of it), in a Theme Park (essentially), that insulates you (as an umpire) from the beyond-the-fence theatrics of parents, coaches, assignors, and completely smitty or ignoramus partner-umpires. Because there is a wide range of experience levels, styles, and knowledge bases, not every umpire is going to be perfect. As long as you (anyone) check your attitude of "I'm a God -certified umpire, and I'll show them how to do everything and my poo doesn't stink" at the gate, and instead walk in with, "I'm here to do the best job I'm capable of for these (young) ballplayers and the game of baseball; if I can help another, I will; if it turns out I need help, I'll listen", you'll do fine.

CDP will go to bat for you (pun!) when it comes to dealing with coaches and parents and fans. It takes alot of the stress out of it for you. Teams _sponsor_ you (formally, shouldn't use the term "paid" ), and yes, that varies per team and per umpire. If you have a team sponsoring you, you do not work their games. Instead, you work any other games throughout the week, thereby being exposed to all different levels and styles. You can work as many games as you want (within reason), or take the minimum (depends on the overall number of umpires there that week, and size of crew). Personally, I love baseball, and am a workhorse anyway, so I did as many games as I could realistically do. I saw it not only as an opportunity to work on my skills and tools for umpiring, but to also set an example for and work alongside other umpires of varying levels themselves. I was made a Crew Chief for 3 of my 4 weeks there, for what I can safely say was my potential and my steadfastness of working with and directing others. Am I perfect Boss-type Crew Chief? No. Am I a perfect umpire? No. Is every Crew Chief the same? Oh heck no. Some are powermongers, some act like overlords, and some are buffoons.

You'll get all manners of umpire there. There's umpires who have worked nothing but solo games, and don't know anything about rotations and mechanics. There's really good umpires, who have done state HS championships based on peer review. There are young kids who are brand-new to the ranks, and don't have a single shirt. There are old codgers who have every color and brand ever made, but still wear the same faded heather grey pants because they're the only ones that fit. Then there's JaxRolo.

I learned alot this year, taught alot this year, and showcased a few things this year. Relative to your "young umpires", Big, this would be an ideal "dress rehearsal" or matinee environment for them. It's real baseball, with a real audience, with a real role to play, but in a (somewhat) tamed environment. Typically, Weeks 11, 12 and 13 are when the umpire numbers start to falter, both because alot of guys have to start looking at other obligations, or school is starting back up, or other reasons. I was there Weeks 3 thru 6, and it sounds like I'll be asked to come back for Week 13 (final week).

"post that that guy's _choice_ to not wear shin guards makes him less of an umpire." Sorry it does. You will bail! Should not be allowed.

Yes there is all kinds of talent. Hence, why I kept ducking up, down, left, right. Hardest hit I took this week was a foul straight to the throat guard. Not F2's fault but all my other hits were their faults. Heard to many "sorry blue". Really didn't like all the flinching I was doing. But I had to get back to more important "Paid" (higher level) games where I won't flinch an inch. I like CDP but is a 1 week deal where I have fun. I love the joy in the little kids that come asking for pins. Then is back to real games.

Honestly, the sun is well below the horizon on the sunset of his umpiring career.  Who am I to tell him that he has to wear shin guards?

You may have a GREAT idea! UE week at CDP could be fun. Kind of a meet and greet.
