I know they're in the majors, but this can't be the right way to handle this at all. Pointing, walking towards a manager and then getting in his face screaming. Looks exactly like he's baiting him and completely unprofessional. I don't think this acceptable in any baseball.

I don't think Dana was angry, I think he was being animated. Note the smiles on both Dale's and Dana's faces as they were walking away. Sometimes people enjoy the show!  As far as the ejection goes, I will not let a coach tell me what I can and can't do on the field, bottom line. If they get too aggressive with their 'suggestions' on how I should do my job, then it's time for them to go.

I agree with the ejection and obviously not letting a manager tell you what you can and cannot do on the field, but the pointing during and before arguments and walking towards the manager looks very unprofessional IMHO at any baseball level. I mean what do you think his ejection report consistented of?

That's for us.  At that level, they continue to deal with the manager / coach / player.  Game management is different at different levels.

@blue23II... I want to make it clear that I am not calling Dana DeMuth unprofessional.  I have the utmost respect for him. He has been in the league a long time and been privileged to work All-Start games and World Series. I am just saying that I think his actions during this situation could have been handled differently.  I don't believe that any situation during a game should cause an umpire to get that emotional even if you have been working in the league for that long.  My favorite ejection of the year is Clint Fagan on Yadier Molina.  He may have just started working in the majors been he acted exactly as he should. Ejected, put his hands in his pockets and did not let his emotions get the best of him.

 

I do not have the MLB manual, but this is from PBUC and I'm sure it is similar to MLB:

 

"1.2 HANDLING SITUATIONS

Handling situations on the field is a challenging aspect of professional umpiring. Umpires must keep the game under control and not exacerbate a situation....

8. If difficult situations arise, it is essential that umpires stay “above the fray†and not adopt the emotional level of a particular player or manager. Every judgment should be made with common sense and knowledge of the Official Baseball Rules."

 

With his EJ Report, obviously I believe he will write facts, but he will have to say that he pointed at a manager multiple times, walked towards him and yelled at him while pointing at him in close proximity.

We don't know what was said from the bench, and we don't know what was said between Demuth and Sveum.  Granted, in a perfect world, aggressive actions by an umpire would be unacceptable. But there are variables in play here that we know nothing about. I would suggest that a more seasoned manager would not have put himself in that situation, to be dressed down by a senior umpire, but perhaps Dale will learn from this. The professional game is all about respect, both giving and getting it. The "show" is even different than MiLB, the umpires are youngin's, working with players who aren't much older than they are. And  yes, Clint Fagan handled his situation perfectly. But Clint Fagan isn't a senior umpire.

Why?

Because the expectations, skills, and understanding of what is happening are different at different levels (for both participants and umpires)

The situation looks very similar (they even laugh at the end) and it got Bob Davidson, another long time veteran, a one game suspension.

In this situation, with Clint is different. Clint is a fill-in..and Dana is a crew chief..

The part where Davidson says, "Fu** you Charlie.  Fu** you" is great.  

 

There have been several times I would have liked to play that card.  Maybe during my last game I work.
