All,

quickly ....

later I'll be doing a couple games for a tourney this weekend ........ 90+ with high humidity, ...heat index around 105 .....

I was thinking that a soaked compression under my CP would help for my plate game later?  Soak in the ice water ,..... squeeze out ....and bingo ....

Ever done this?  And, did it work?

Thanks!

I think it may help for a few minutes, but the moisture in it will likely rise to your body temperature by the time the plate meeting is concluded.  Thermal dynamics suggests that the evaporation will likely have some cooling effect, but not sure how efficient it would be in a humid environment.  It's worth a try.

Just get some sprits of ammonia.

4-6 oz per gal of cold water.

Us southern boys use it all the time.

Have 2-4 Kool ties in a small cooler.

That will keep you cool all game.

It's been hot and humid the past 3 weeks here, and I've been doing a lot a games with the little league tourney in full swing and travel ball finishing up their schedules. I drink water all day, and I'll bring  gatoraide and water in my cooler along with a soaked washcloth. As long as I keep that soaked washcloth around the ice packs in the cooler, it stays cool and wet and I towel off with it in between innings and take in fluid as needed. Pouring a little water down the back of your neck instantly cools me off too.

I would NOT recommend this.

Here's my personal experience. Legion game in the stereotypical southern air-you-can-wear crazy high temps and high humidity.

I was completely spent after the game and went straight into the home team dugout took off my CP and stood under their fan. My Under Armour knock off (C9) was soaked through. The trainer came by and asked me if I needed help. I told her I was just going to refresh under the fan because I was overheated.

She told me to take off my shirt too. Not only because I'm built like a Greek Adonis and she was hot for me. She disguised her lust by telling me that with my shirt being as wet as it was my skin couldn't breathe and that would hamper me recovering as quickly.

Once I took of my shirt I did notice a difference.

There has got to more to this story!

" ...........the team's trainers' name was Angel, ....I never thought this would happen to me!!"  :)

First of all, thanks for all the suggestions!

Everything went fine last night,....I had the 630 game on the stick.  There was a breeze which helped a lot, ...we had a heat index of 105-108 yesterday,....gametime was 92 with 75% humidity.   We keep a small cooler w/ ice water and towels, and I would wipe my arms off, put it on my face, and squeeze it over my head every full inning.....it worked great.  It was hot, and by the 7th I was tired, but it wasn't as bad as I thought.

2 more later today.....same conditions .....then 4 on Saturday AFTER THE FRONT comes through .... 84 w/ WAY less humidity, so no problems there, plus, we'll be able to change between games in the U-M locker room ....... it'll suck, but....we'll manage! :D:meditation:

Welcome to an everyday game here in the south.

Glad you are OK.

Went to a clinic not long ago and part of it was how to survive a 3 day tournament in July and August in the south.

Great tips with lots on preping the days before the tournament.

Power/gatoraid days before with a high carb diet.

Banannas and yougurt game days with more carbs after game day.

Only water while you are calling.

Advil 3 times per day.

I hear pickle juice is the new wonder drink.

I used to to do 4-6 games per day for three days long ago in 90+ weather.

Now I get tired just being a clubhouse flunkey/UIC in these tournaments.

Three man rotation per field is the best with one guy in the clubhouse/shade tree off then relieving one of the 2 other umpires.

BETTER THAN SNOW!

I'm just across the river from Jeff so conditions were about the same. This was a Provincial qualifier so we had teams from all over Southern Ontario. Had 1 rain shortened game on Fri night and due to 2 injuries and a no show I had 6 plates in a row on Sat. Just drank lots of water and had apples, bananas, and grapes. I was lucky and had 2 CPs with me and could change them and my under shirt between games The no show's mother had a car accident and he was at the hospital. At the end of the day I was tired but was much better than I thought I would be. I really don't want to do that again any time soon.

Florida water is a life saver in the South... you put in in a cooler with ice and water, and it will stay cold all day, and when you rub it on on your skin it will instantly cool you down, and you can put the towel over your head and breathe in and it will cool your body temp down... also look into ammonia water.

I ordered both Spirits of ammonia and Florida Water this season.  Florida water wins hands down.   Awesome aroma paired with the ice-water soaked terry towel over the head is awesome.   Squeezed ice-water in to my compression shirt every 1/2 inning and the slight breeze did wonders.  Soaked my cap too. . . yeah.

My games were in the desert, but I had a couple weeks with 80% humidity and 99 degree temps and I still didn't have any issues staying cool.

Used my 1 remaining right temp pad, too.   That thing works great.     I made the mistake of leaving my other pad in the sun and the sealing glue melted and leaked.   I was devastated, especially now that they don't sell them any more. (?)

The sun is the only thing I can't stand.   There is no answer for the sun beating down on your back or face.    In fact, I would rather work 100 degrees at night, than 90 degrees in direct sunlight.   It really is brutal.

Saturday I called the last three games of a 23 game week . Temp in the 90's with rain showers every day . I had the bases for the first two games . In the second game ,about the third inning , the pitcher looked at me and said he felt sick then proceeded to hurl and fell to his knees . He was carried off the field . I went on brake and drove to Subway for a sandwich . When I got back to the field for my plate game , the paramedics were at the field because a player had passed out in the dugout and was unresponsive with a blood pressure of 170 something over 40 something . As I was walking to the locker room , a player waiting for the next game was sitting in the bleachers getting an IV .

I'M 59 and had no problems . I hydrate with water and Pedialite and cool off with Frog Toggs Chilly Pads . Hydration is the key . Cooling off helps and feels good ,but stay hydrated ! http://www.froggtoggs.com/chilly-pad-9.html
