Question

New here, so let me know if I am screwing up. Should I start a new post, or can I Segway to another type of tag? Here goes. Ground ball to third. Poor throw to 1st baseman. Throw takes 1st baseman up in the air. Throw is up the line toward home plate. 1st baseman gloves throw and applies tag to batter-runner's back. I pointed with left arm and said, " yes, got em on the back" . Also, I did read poor throw and took an "adjustment" step toward 1st base line. I never got set. My issue is this. I know I have a tag on the back, but I am not sure it happened before the batter-runner touched 1st base.

I can not look high for the tag and low for the foot on the bag at the same time. It's like the example play but at a different base. Uic is looking at the tag but has the foot already touched home before the tag? Is this a scenario where you just do the best you can, or do you have some tips.

Make your call from the information that you have.  If the OC comes out to ask about it and you feel that getting help from your partner is acceptable, then do that.  You have to make the call at the time though.

I probably would not get help on this because you saw all the information that's there and now you just need to decide.  And by probably I mean definitely.  So yes you do need to be far enough away to see high and see low and use your judgement on what happened.

I agree that this is BU's call.

The only advantage PU has is distance: with greater distance you CAN see both the tag and the foot in one glance. So, if you've got a tag (not a swipe and miss), make your best call. If a coach asks you to get help, ask PU (privately) if he has anything. That should be a very brief conversation: "Did he beat the tag?" "No." Signal the out. As usual, ask your partner a yes/no question, not "what did you see?"

If you're setting up the recommended 18-21 feet from 1B, you should have a pretty good look. The closer you are, the worse the look.

Ground ball to F-5. Errant throw takes 1st baseman toward home and up in the air.

1st baseman tags batter-runner in back.

Question- Did the tag occur before the batter-runner touched 1st base?

Problem: how do you look high for the tag and Low for the foot on the bag at the same time.

What I did: I read poor throw from f-5

I took an adjustment step to my left

I watched f-3 tag batter-runner in back

I pointed with my left arm and said,

" yes, he got em on the back."

I called the batter/runner out

Not sure I got the call right.

My distance from 1st base was around

15 feet and I did make 1 "adjustment"

Step to my left.

Got any suggestions?

For F3 going up the line toward home, adjust toward the mound. this way you build and angle where you can see the tag. it sounds like in the OP you were looking at his chest when the tag (attempt) was on his back.

once F3 has to come off the base to field a throw, there's no more force, so don't worry about watching the bag. 15 feet is as close as you want to be. The further you are, the easier it will be to see the touch of first in relation to the tag.

Thanks for the good info. I was going to say I would not ask U.I.C. for help because he is straight lined. Then your comments made me think I was considering asking the wrong question

I knew I had a tag so I do not need that info, but I can ask about batter-runner foot on bag before tag. I want to get this myself without asking for help. I was 15 feet from bag. Maybe too close. I was in a standing set after an adjustment step on the poor throw.
