Question

Posted

I just recently purchased a brand new Rawlings coolflo hockey style umpire helmet for umpiring. There is padding near the chin under the mask, it seems very hard to talk with the padding there. I was thinking about taking it out, I've tested it out without it a bit and find it doesn't decrease my protection. Has anyone who has a hockey style mask experimented and has umped a game without this padding. It's a 13U game, so the balls aren't thrown too hard?

I WOULD NEVER REMOVE PADDING FROM THE FACE AREA OF A MASK!!!!!

Dont do it.

Have you called a 13u Game yet ?

They throw harder than you think.

Nope. I'm a young umpire and I am umpiring a scrimmage soon, then it is on to real games. Just a practice game to get things started.

On protective gear.

"If they make, buy it and wear it"

I have seen more injuries in practice situations than anywhere else.

jason,

You really don't want to remove it.

You may very well want to ADJUST it so it fits more comfortably. The chin pad is "velcroed" in and is easily adjusted for a more comfortable fit, which also may protect you better.

Big,

I just looked up the helmet you are using.

I dont think it will protect you in 13u ball.

Curious why you would think that.

My son used that helmet as a catcher in 13U & 14U travel leagues when he was younger. Protected him fine.

If your cup made you walk funny, would you remove it to do a game?   I'm just sayin'...............

It's my clown shoes that make me walk funny.

Then put your shoes in your jock, tie your cup to your feet & PLAY BALL!

OK, I looked it up. Didn't find anything that would indicate the helmet would not be suitable.

What did you find?

Just looked fragile to me. You seem to have more experence than me with this helmet. Would you use it? if yes. It must be ok. I will spend less on shin guards BUT on my noggon gear i buy the best and recomend that to all young umps.

Jason, in Texas we have a saying, " its not the heat, its the humidity". They don't throw overly fast/hard, but its enough. It might sting for a minute, but it'll go away. It's the fouls straight back that'll get you. In my experience, when I get hit by a foul, its in the lower 1/3 of my mask (chin area). That's where you just took the padding from, leaving nothing to absorb the blow.

I have used a HSM for 3 years and had no issues. Talking and being heard hasn't been an issue either. Definitely recommend you adjust the straps well though. It can do a lot of moving if not tight.

Which HSM do you use?
