Before he has come set I got:

Nothing, Nada, Zip

After he has come set I got:

That's a Balk!  Start and Stop

For the record, both my partner and I had nothing.

I had never seen it before, so it did make me hesitate.

both you and your partner need to look up pitcher violations

The pitcher is required to come set with a smooth, continuous motion. [8.01b]

As long as this bobble happens relatively smoothly, like in the OP, there's no balk. The discerning umpire will also recognize that there is zero advantage to be gained, and do everything he can to let it slide, IMO.

You seem like a class act, Spirit.  :sarcasm:

Since neither of the guys who claim this is a balk have stated why, I am going to guess it is based on F1 failing to come set "without interruption and in one continuous motion." OP does not go into great detail as to what F1 did to regain control of the ball, how far the ball traveled, etc, but it would seem logical he must have "interrupted" and/or "altered" his stretch motion somewhat to secure the errant ball.  I am sure he was just as surprised as both umpires.  Also, when the ball was out of F1's possession, if the ball descended at all, it is by definition "dropped."

Would be interested in JM's thoughts on this.

Failing to come set in one motion.

Taking a hand off the ball

Dropping the ball.

At least as Im invisioning the play I think Id have a balk.

The real reason though -- it just looks weird.  lol.

1. "Continuous motion" may very well have been violated. Then again, it may very well have not been.

2. Taking a hand off the ball only applies after the pitcher has "come set".

3. He didn't actually drop the ball.

You easily COULD  have a balk on this, but, then again, it could happen without the pitcher balking.

There is no balk proscription against "looking weird".

I get the "if it looks weird, call it" adage.  However, this was a JV game (big suburb school vs. small Christian school)  that had gotten out of hand quickly (home team up 15-0 in top of 4), so we were just trying to get the game over with.

I don't know how you guys handle those situations, but for me, in blowouts, I'm a little more lenient to balks or general things that aren't giving a team an advantage.  In Varsity games I won't let that stuff go, but I don't think you can treat bad JV and Freshman games the same way.

This was a freak thing that happened, but I like this site because I can ask a question like this and be better prepared for future games.  Thanks guys.

JM, curious as to what you view as a "dropped ball?"
