I'd would definitely prefer new... The reason I put "or very gently used" was more for if the choice came down to either a pair worn twice in a scrimmage for $20 or the same pair, brand new for $100, I'd probably go with the used ones, because I could still break those in.   Thanks for the links Jocko!   With the first, I like the price a lot, but I think it's got a bit too much white for me and the association.   The second is definitely a good option. I like the price and the white (or silver) is probably low enough to please the higher-ups...   Unless I see a better option by my next check, I'll probably purchase one of those two.
MJR, what association are you referring to that may think you have too much white on your shoes? Sent from my XT907 using Tapatalk 2

You must be very privileged to only work on fields that are in pristine condition and you don't have to worry about mesh on your base shoes.... Sent from my XT907 using Tapatalk 2

Most likely a LOT of hard work and dedication as opposed to privilege...

I don't think the fields I work on are any nicer or than the fields you work. I was merely trying to offer a fellow umpire a reasonable option at a reasonable price. I know that in the environs that I have worked I am glad for the added ventilation and gladly trade a few extra moments with a damp rag and canned air for not having my feet feel like they have been in hockey skates for three days. As one last thing if I did have the privilege to work on nicer fields why would you hate on me for that?

It comes from my MHSAA's mentor's suggestion (though that may have just been his preference)... It also states it here:

The required uniform of an umpire for both regular season and tournament contests consists of either a navy blue or powder blue pullover with red/white or navy/white sleeve and collar stripes, gray slacks and proper umpire cap. Although either navy blue or powder blue pullover shirts are allowed, both (all) umpires must wear the same color pullover. An umpires cap with the MHSAA monogrammed logo is permitted. All other articles (i.e., turtleneck, undershirt and jacket) shall be navy blue. The belt, shoes and socks shall be solid black. The ball bag shall be either gray or navy blue. The current MHSAA OFFICIALS EMBLEM shall be visible and WORN ON THE LEFT POCKET.

I'm not sure how strict this really is though.

Most HS dress codes state all black shoes. I've never heard of one actually outlawing B/W shoes.

There are no such restrictions here in Washington. I don't think there is any in Oregon either. However white one shoes is "frowned upon" in Oregon. That being said, I remember that CIF Southern Section didn't have a problem but CIF Los Angeles had a major issue with them. Up to and including loss of playoff games and such.

Not necessarily ........... more than likely, yes,, ....hard work and dedication can get you better games on better fields, however, there are many areas of the country that have nicer field conditions in general ....

HATE???????  Really?

No hate there ......it's just a comment.   Let's face it,.......... If you can wear mesh base shoes and get away with it without going through hell cleaning them, ....then you're in a nice area with nice fields.  It's just a correlation, ...no hate at all......  Sorry you took it that way

Although I've only done one short season of HS ball last year, ... I didnt' work a game with anyone without a little white on their shoes.  I wouldn't worry about it.

What's the difference between mesh and Nike fly wire?

I think you mean Hyperfuse .... fly wire is what's underneath the outer skin.

Hyperfuse is actually a feasible material on shoes for us.  It's a mesh-looking material, but it's hard, and it's very close knit.  Not your typical "mesh"
