Thought I'd move this from the newbie thread.

I wore combos all last year because I only had one pare all year. I loved them. I bought a pair of plate pants for this year, but have every intention to continue with the combos on the bases. They are comfortable, I think they look good.

Nobody bothered to answer my question as to why they were against combos. Does anybody care too now?

I just believe they look goofy (combos) on the bases with all the extra material. I'd rather have someone wear combos on the dish than combos on the bases. However, plate pants for the plate and base pants for the bases are the way to go! avatar137493_6.gif Much more professional looking.

there is a reason they make plate pants and base pants--to be worn on the base and plate-- the combos look to much like plate pants to wear on the bases(too wide in the legs) On an even more important subject--ONLY ONE PAR OF PANTS FOR THE SEASON???????

If you feel good, then fine. You may want to have someone video you or take a few photographs. We are often oblivious to what we actually look like. I like combo's when I do a tournament and I don't have a lot of time to change between games. Although in reality, it does not take long to drop your britches and put on another pair.

Especially when you're having to take them off to get gear on or off.

Base pants are more streamlined and just look better on the base. You don't wear a shirt two sizes two big...why pants? Work bases on a windy day in combos and ask someone how you look.

I must be a Umpire Fashion ***** since I have 1 pair of Combo and 2 Plate Pants.

I wear the combos if I am scheduled to only working the bases.

Just in case I have to get behind the plate if something happens to my partner.

Yes it did happen in a tournament over MLK Weekend.

Game was delayed 14 minutes while I went to put on my plate gear.

If I am working multiple games and start on the dish then I am wearing plate pants on the bases after I come off the dish.

I just look good in anything I wear. :meditation:;)

Where I live Ca stands for California not Canada and it is perfectly acceptable here.

We are not talking NCAA or Pro Ball.

The issue of Base, Combo or Plate Pants has never once even been addressed by any Association or League here.

Oh, and the majority of umpires do the same thing here.

PS

Some tournaments we have but a few minutes to change.

1) I know you're in California

2a) What does where I'm from matter in this instance?

2b) Canada is a very big place so even if it did matter where I was from, you'd be better off to be addressing standards of uniform in Ontario.

2c) It's acceptable here too; our dress code merely states "grey pants" but

3) I'm just surprised that this is permitted / you do this.

We do the same with our REC games. As long as you have Grey pants you are good to go. I use Combo Pants for REC games.

When I work School games weather it Varsity, JV or Middle School I will wear Plate pants or Base Pants accordingly.

I wear base pants on the bases and COMBOS on the plate... my legs are much like that of a young chicken and plate pants just do not work. ump24/semper it's a matter of area/association, at a meeting a few weeks back the UIC of my local HS association told the new guys "just pick up some grey slacks from walmart"... I almost fell off my chair. 1

I have one pair of combos that is in my car for every game in case they are needed (they were my sole pair of umpire pants my first year). I also have plate/base pants and 90% + of my games I wear them. I found myself using the combos on Rec ball Saturdays last spring when I would have 5-6 games with multiple partners where I did not have the chance to do the first 3 or last 3 behind the plate (which is far easier to do when you have the same partner). Since my partner was pretty much ready to go as soon as the preceding game ended, I could save a minute or 2 changing if I used the combos. At the end of the day this can save 15-20 minutes. Most of the rec coaches I deal with don't pay attention to your pants, but they will remember if the last 3 games you worked started late.

I've found that combo pants work okay with some guys. If you're short, the taper of the pants don't come into play as much, so they won't be squeezing your shinguards at the bottom.

Me, I've got long legs, that were thickened up by years of bicycle racing. I use the GD combos on the bases, as the base pants are too tight in the thighs. But I rarely wear them anymore, as I have a bunch of poly-wools now. The poly-wool sizing is ideal for me. (they don't make poly-wool combos for a reason)

Moral: Don't have your legs look like 7 pounds of potatoes in a 5 pound bag.

Easy now, everybody.

In some locations, just having a guy show up in gray pants is a great thing. Other places have other standards, and other folks have different abliities.

We should preface our remarks with, "If you're able......", or "If you have the choice....". None of us here started out with 7 pair of poly-wools, 2 WVs, 18 shirts, three jackets and a plate coat.

I look just fine at all times.

The only chip on my shoulder is for folks, seemingly such as yourself, that are quick to judge and presume to know something about me from a forum post. Believe me, of I could afford another pair of pants, I'd have bought them.

Some guys who are.. lets just say much thinner than me ;) ... who like wearing combos as their plate pants. They say that with the extra material of base pants is too much for them on the plate.

I don't think I will ever be able to experience this for myself.
