Last play of the last of 5 18U games I called (OBR with modifications). Have bases loaded by walks and bad fielding, no outs, tie game in the bottom of the last inning. Batter goes 2-0. The next pitch comes inside, and I see batter turn away from the pitch, but do none of the jumping back or ducking or other more demonstrative motions to avoid. The pitch does hit him, I award first, game over. Everyone on the away team is saying he leaned into it, I call the game and walk to put away balls to prepare to exit, some quite loudly. Why am I expected to bend over backwards to accommodate you and when you screw up, it is my fault? I didn't load up the bases, I didn't throw an inside pitch in that situation. Sorry for the rant.

It's your fault cause your the umpire. They won't blame anyone on their team and they won't give credit to the other team. Therefore by default the scapegoat is the umpire.

Oh I know, but it is getting old. Whatever happened to taking responsibility?

Have you seen some of the parents these days? Where do you think the kids get it from?? And ya it gets old real fast.

It's not "these days." It has always been this way. If participants were ever able to be objective, we wouldn't be around.

No, I love what I do. Just a rant from last night, got back on the field today, all is well in the world (might have something in the ejection section later).

We all look forward to reading that.

I have been working AAU tournaments for the last three weeks and thus far have worked an 11U and 14U championship game. Both times it has been my fault that the loosing team lost the game. I let it roll off like a good umpire should but I do find it pathetic.

Isn't it funny how the game starts off with everyone smiling and being cordial. A few innings in, someone makes an error or F1 can't find the zone. Maybe a team gets hot and starts hitting in the gaps. Once a team starts gaining an edge, the other team starts chirping and griping. All of a sudden, it becomes our fault. We're squeezing the zone, we're favoring. Every call is against them, as opposed to just calling them as they are. It's pathetic.

You want to work a baseball game and be liked by everyone? Sell beer......

That won't work either. MADD objects. Teatotalers object. Fans sitting near obnoxious drunks object. That's why some stadiums have beer-free (not free beer) sections.

Think how the reffs from the Monday Night Football game are feeling this morning

You have to feel for these guys. It's not that they're not good but that they are just outmatched. I'm sure plenty of UE members consider themselves good umpires but almost none of us could do an MLB game.

Why not??? I like to think I'm good enough. Until proven otherwise.

I said almost. The majority here would say no.

Saturday evening 14U game. 9 to 9 bottom of the seventh. It's not 9 to 9 because both teams are stacked with hitters. Bases loaded with one out and infield playing in. Ground ball to short. He starts to throw to first, everyone on his half of the park is yelling to throw home. He throws home, where catcher is stradling the plate and applies tag to sliding base runner on a bang bang play. Ball pops loose on the tag. My partner calls an emphatic "safe" and points at ball on the ground. Defensive coach loses his mind. Screaming that it was a force out. Comes running to me to overturn my partner. My partner is headed for the exit quickly. I calmly inform him I saw the same thing as my partner. He keeps repeating it is a force out. I try to explain that it is a force play, but because his catcher was not on the base there was in fact no out. Then becasue the ball came loose there was no out on the tag. Of course, the loss was our fault because we don't know what a force out is. I wanted to explain that if his pitcher had not just hit two batters and walked another the bases would not have been loaded. And that if his shortstop knew the situation and threw home properly, and the catcher had a foot on the base it would have indeed been a force out. But those things didn't happen, and they lost.

The NFL has more whiners than MLB. All I've heard about is the refs costing Greenbay the game last night and nothing about the fact that they had the ball with less than 2 minutes left and couldn't even get 1 first down to run the clock out. :jerkit:

typical. When a team loses the edge, it becomes the officials' fault.

1 call didn't cost them the game. Non-execution of plays, dropped passes, missed blocking assignments, missed tackles, bad reads cost them the game.
